This is a piece of scrap I made with a file....hehe I destroyed a new file. Probably W1 but maybe 1095.
The tang is actually the result of a failed clay-coated quench (supposed to be the blade end), and then I just use the other end for a smaller piece.
It is quite interesting in polishing. I rubbed it with sand-paper and from 200-400 grit, I can see the temper-line quite clearly. But after I go up to 600, the temper-line slowly disappeared.
For this pic, I've wiped it with diluted ferric chloride before the scanning.
This thing holds an edge vvvvery well!
