Here's a walk down memory lane. A C07S Gen 1 Police "PIG" - Pride Integrity & Guts (engraved on the blade) - currrently for sale on the Bay.
Made around 1984-86 (per Spydiewiki). Supposedly NOS. Price on the sticker on the box is $61.98. LOL! ;)

Would love to buy it but they're asking $1k for it. So, a virtual viewing will have to do.

It took me 14 years to land one for under $400, but I managed it. That one has been up for quite a while with no takers.

I love seeing all these vintage Spydies. It's a testament to Spyderco that their retired models are still so desirable to some.

Dang, and I thought my coveted piece was very expensive at $800. I don't want to say what it is because I am afraid someone will go and buy it haha, but if you have seen me post here, it's an impractical model that is not usually used for daily cutting, and this version is not production either. If I snag it, I'm gonna show it off!

People really love these PIG Police models, huh? I think they're quite cool myself, but that's a LOT of money!

$1000 is far above market value for a SE with stripped/replaced clip screws.

Frankly, I think $1k for this knife is simply too much -- stripped/replaced screws or not.

Depending on condition and a box (or not), I'd be a buyer of one that's LNIB in the $300-500 range MAX. $500 is my current MAX for any knife but there only a few knives that I'd like to buy that cost more than this.

The knife being sold doesn't quite measure up IMO because of the modified nature (at least the seller was being honest) and the generally poor appearance of the knife (the seller could cleaned it better) and the poor condition of the box.

We'll find out what others think if it remains unsold. It's not the only "overpriced" knife on the Bay. I'm still getting chuckles out of the $1350 being asked for a Kershaw Volt 3600, which I saw being sold not too long ago on the Exchange for much less.

Were were also 3 (now 2) Szaboflys for sale on ACK's site for $1.2-1.3k that have languished there. One of the seller's dropped the price to $950 but it still remains unsold. So, sellers are finding that there is a limit to what people will pay for knives.

The PIG model was very controversial when it came out. LEO's loved it, dealers didn't think so. I thought it very gutsy at the time (my design). I've seen good ones go for $1K. We've been asked many times to bring a sprint back, but we don't want to do that.

I think that if the actual LEOs are cool with it, that's who's opinion matters. I'm not going to be offended on part of police, or tell police what they should be offended at. I can't imagine who would.

This is actually a common technique, take the letters of a slur and turn them into a positive acronym. Seen it done at one point or another to "re-purpose" or "retake" dang near any slur that existed. To take an example that isn't politically fuelled, folks who play video games might write "yes I'm a GAMER G - Good with my hands, A - Able to think fast, M - Meticulous" or whatever,

I get it, though.

I get it, though.

Well, I grew into adulthood during the 60-70's when calling an LEO a "PIG" was an slur equivalent to the "N" word and an invitation to suffer from police violence in the age of the Free Speech Movement, acid rock and "the hippies." Remember the 1968 Demo Convention in Chicago?

The word lost its "edge" in the 80's when politics became less volatile -- no more War in Vietnam, no more 3rd World Strike, no more Black Panthers, etc.

I'm sure it was still a sensitive word among LEOs during that time but the way it's worded on the knife gives "ownership" of the word to back law enforcement. Just like young Black men like to do w/the N word by calling each other that word all the time but heaven help anyone else who called them that.

Yeah, go ahead, call me a "PIG" a$$shole!

It stands for the "Pride, Integrity and Guts" it takes to be a cop. I didn't become a cop until 1996 but I get it too and I'd love to own a pair of PIGs (in PE and SE) but there's no way I'm paying more than $500 for one (or $1k for the pair). ;)

Hey Sgt,

Sounds like you are a young guy, 'bout my age, or a bit younger. Thanx for the memory trip. Yes, I was around in in the 60's. Yes, I was one of them "hippies". Cut my long hair in '68, took my ear ring out, and started to "grow up".

Thanx much for your service.

You started policing the year I was born, wild! Yeah, it is an interesting thing, trying to get a pulse on these transitions, what they meant, how they felt, in a time before I was born. I know it is not 100% pertinent to the discussion at hand, but I keep revisiting various videos of 1970s NY neighborhoods, really dilapidated, Warriors-esque places, all burnt to hell, and you still see some heartbeat in the place.

Though, I have opted to keep my long hair for a bit longer while I still can, Sal! More metal than hippie, though.
😁
Can't say I blame any party wanting to take their respective slurs back, I love it. I hope you find 'em, man. Much respect for the work.

When I got out of the Navy in 1982, I went to work with a guy that had a brother (and his mother) on the city police force, so I got to know most of the force. I remember the Pride, Integrity, Guts to own the "pig" slur, but I couldn't tell you whether that was before or after the C07 was introduced.

Wow, I'm very fortunate to have caught mine for so little. It was an estate piece from a retired NYPD officer. All the seller wanted to do was hold onto it for a few more weeks to write a blog about it.
I hate what has become of our Exchange. Flooded by flippers and Ebay/Facebook/Reddit prices. To bad there's no go back to eBay button.

That is sad, I do not browse it very often, especially cause I mainly searched for what I wanted instead of browsing, I found some great people who sold me some great stuff, at really decent prices! Sometimes saving me hundreds of bucks. Got a 10V PM2 for $155, a UTX-70 for $180, a vintage ATS-55 Civilian for like $160, Cold Steel S35VN/fancy Espada XL + GRIK + Voyager Tanto XL for $350, he could have sold just the Espada for that much.

I browse the Exchange everyday and haven't noticed this problem.

I also browse the Bay and ACK daily and prices are almost always lower here, especially when you take taxes and shipping into account.

The exchange isn’t what it used to be…but still mostly good sellers. We have our share of flippers & scammers. Hang around long enough and you’ll recognize the good guys.

Damn, that's interesting!

I had no idea Spyderco was making knives in 84'. Really is an amazing story.

Yes, I agree that there are some flippers and scammers on the Exchange but they are easily identifiied.

There's one "flipper" on the Exchange who likes to lock his threads so that there is no transparency in his sale dealings (who buys and then resells the same knives on the Exchange) but I don't see how he can make much profit doing that.

Way too much trouble to me but I'm not very business minded. LOL! ;)
