The Pins are Flying!

I talked to the purchasing agent of the main wholesaler of the Taiwan Butterfly Knives. I wanted to know why everyone was having problems with the pins flying apart in them. He said he thinks that in order to get them past customs, they are importing the blades and the handles in seperate containers, and assembling them here in this country. So, that is why they are using those cheap compression pins that are easy to install. He felt it would be best to replace the pins with stainless steel, and I do have a supplier that has 12" lengths of it in the right diameter. So I guess I will see about getting some of those from him. Of course I am sure Clay's suggestion of just using a nail, would work out just fine also, for a solution to the problem. I know they make a tool that will put a round head on those pins, so maybe I will check into that also. Thanks, JohnR7 WWW.BalisongKnife.Com

i think that they need to get some better pins in them, all my Rostfrei's, the pins always break within a day or less of use. the need pins like in Benchmade knives

You can do your own pins like BM does. Remember those 2 repinning tips I posted a while ago? My jag has nice flush pins. Course I screwed the finish in the process so I just sanded all the nickel coating off. Its not an aluminum handle as I see some peolpe saying, it is zamak.

I don't think so. They are way heavier than they should be . Zamak and aluminum both don't have a very good shine and they both oxidize to a grey color quickly.

>>if they improved the pins them would probably cost......$10-$20,

How long would it take to put decent pins in a butterfly? I can buy a punch that will round the head for about $5 and they sell a 12" length of stainless steel for about $3. It should not take more than 5 or 10 min. per knife. Seems like someone would be making pretty good money, to replace the pins and sell them for $5 more. But it would have to be done on a retail level, the whole salers move thousands of these things.

Hey John,

I believe the folks would rather buy the cheap knife and do Clay's tip themselve's rather than pay extra for someone to do it for them.

I hated the "cheap" pin knives sincerely, but, I get along with them now that I have re-pinned them. Keeps me from beating the S#$* out of my keepers.

8D finish nails are only @ $3.00 per # approx.

I guess it does not make sense to pay $3 for 12" of stainless 1/8" rod, for a $6 knife. But I am still going to try and find the right size tool, to put a nice round head on them. If we could get this thing cleared up with customs, so they would start to allow them to be imported again, then we would not have this problem. We could get them to build 'em right in China or Taiwan, instead of having to import the part and put them together real quick over here. Thanks, JohnR7
