Here is (a forthcoming) picture of Bhairab Khukuri.
According to Yangdu's shop manager Rajesh this knife was very rare and historical; used by Nepal King Prithvi Narayan Shah.

Overall length --25''

Weight -- 76 oz

Spine thickness -- 1/2''

Brass Bhairab head buttcap

Brass guard

Copper inlayed on both sides or balde

Satisal wood handle

Brown leather scabbard

Made by Vim Kami

Yangdu wants to raise monies for Ram. There is one Baihrab kukri she will put up. She's thinking about the second being another or direct sale? Not sure.
You may remember these blades. There is a ornate head of brass metal, looks a little Lionesh but it probably a creature we've never seen on this world. I asked Yangdu whether they were full tanged, and her answer was 'full tanged, mushroomed to Baihrab head."

Not exactly certain what that means, but sounds better than a stick tang for such a heavy blade. I don't know why these blades did not sell. Yangdu thinks they were too heavy. There is something to that; we are talking about a 25" and 76 ounce blade- that sounds like a AK to me, yet this one has a ornate head and half guard on the handle. Was it that the people who wanted full size AK's did not want the other? I don't know.

Where were the collectors, I wondered. HI has taken a couple dips up and down, I've even heard someone think they were finished. Yeah, I know, I also heard Brittany going to Princeton... Would a collector not want the blade because he thought the appeal was gone? Maybe she just couldn't sell them on THAT day, whatever day it was, and here at least one of them will be for us to take a shot at.

The blades are amazing, but out of my price range, 330 each. They have a gentle sweep/curve, the blades are rather shark like and rather leaf like, just not a very broad leaf. The raffle ticket price would be 15 dollars each. I was in no position to buy a ticket earlier, but will be buying one of these. My chance for a giant, only two of a kind, animal headed monster blade. I could definately go for a monster blade with a monster on the handle.

Anyway, Yangdu will be along here presently, or form another thread, it makes no difference. I just thought you'd like to know. I've a chore I've got to get done right now, perhaps I'll write about it, perhaps not, and I'll check back in later to see what became of the Barirab. Something good, I hope.

I remember those. I would love to have one, but I'm pretty poor right now. They were gorgeous! However, I will be more than happy to pitch in for a ticket to help Ram out.

I just got back from my errand- it ran a lot shorter than I thought. Anyway, there's mail from Yangdu that she won't hold the raffle today. Details forthcoming.
Yes, I would like a shot at those too.

I'd be in for one of those. Since I seem to collect kopis like blades it's a shoe in.

I could be wrong, but if the tang goes all the way through the handle, it's a full tang, and that seems to be the definition she uses fromt he times I've asked her. In fact, I believe she said "All HI kukri are full tang." Which means they don't have to have exposed, or full-width tangs to be considered full.

I don't know why these blades did not sell. Yangdu thinks they were too heavy. To be honest, I would have jumped on them, but they cost too much. I was actually very attracted to the weight (I think it's well known that I like the big choppers), But I dropped a little over a grand between August and September and just couldn't justify it at the time.

I just hope the raffle isn't over by the time I get home on whatever day it is.

Most, but not all HI khukuris are full tang. Look at the Hanuman, for instance. My question was whether the tang went through the figurehead. If it does, that's full tang. Now I see Ted's picts here, I can clearly see the mushroomed tang end on top of the figurine's head. In the picts I had, it was less clear.
Crazy as it may sound, I was considering the possibility the tang actually did mushroom at the end of the wooden handle, and the figure placed on top or at the end of that. It would have been a first, but HI has surprised me several times over the years.
I think she's going to start the raffle tomorow, but I don't know for sure. You're not late.

You know, the shock of the size of that blade is wearing off. It is a nice looking blade, isn't it?

Munk, gotcha on the tang thing. Didn't know what you were saying. I've heard some insist that it's not a full tang, even if it goes all the way through, unless it's a full-width.

And yes, the blade looks excellent, although I'm not sure about the copper inlay.

Thank you for the help, munk
