Okay, it's not really a mystery,
well, it is to me....
What I would like to know is...
what's up with it?!?!
Does the shop do it by hand?
Or is it only an aftermarket at home modification?
If it is done by the shop,
does this make the knife more valueable?
(personally, I don't like it all that much)
Also, is there a way to tell if the shop did it,
or if someone else polished up the spine.
thanks for your time. :D

Several questions there... :)

The main interest in polished spines comes with coated blades, since obviously a satin blade should have a satin spine :)

I have no freaking clue if it is done by hand or machine. Some of my polished spines look so good I would tend to think it was done by hand....but like I said I simply do not know.

Yes..absolutely. For example if you have a coated BAE with a coated spine you will still get a higher resell price because of its popularity. However if you have a coated BAE with a polished spine that will again add to the resell price.

I've seen pics of people stripping the spines of there knives at home and to date you could easily tell it was an amateur job. Now, if a knife maker were to do the modification...who knows. I don't think you have to worry about this. There are probably very few people who would risk ruining a Busse just to try and polish the spine.

IIRC, it's so that you can hit the spine with a hammer, and not have a coating there to ruin, just plain steel that can be hit on, for maybe driving through splitting wood, or whatever...

Gteat questian, Do you think that you could use the polished spine on a firesteel? Or would the 1/4 steel be to thick? Thanks for the help.

i think the attraction to the polished spine is the fact that the spine/handle fit is perfectly smooth on 'em.

use the choil for your fire steel, or the blade it's self.
