then I practically ran him down, I have been waiting impatiently all day.
My little IBBB that I purchased from Auntie a while back has certainly made the rounds till today when she made it home. YAY!!!
First it went to Bawanna, who it should be said had an entire collection of these sent to him by Auntie and he had the integrity to deliver each and every one to the appropriate person. Why it only took several stern talking too's in the mirror to convince himself to let them go and finish sending em all out, if that isn't an honorable man then I don't know what is.
Now when he took them out of the triangle box, he took one look at mine and new exactly what was needed. So with skill and an inate sense of style that definately doesn't show in the outfit he is wearing for his avatar picture, he shortened the extra metal behind the grip. Then smiling to himself because of the near impossible feat he had performed. (Improving on this practically perfect knife) he did some beautiful skip-line checkering that feels as good to the hand as it is beautiful to look at. Seriously it is awesome. It is straight, even depth and widths and the edges are all sharp and precise. I have a bespoke .375H&H double rifle done by some of the best in the business for Holland & Holland and Bawanna's work rivals that work for checkering easily. Now he didn't engrave the blade with a hunting scene and relief scrolls with gold inlays. BUT at the difference in price, I would say his was a definate bargain for the work done.
Then he sent it on the trip down to Pugs who it happens had been beset by a herd of angry beavers that escaped from the Deluth trading TV commercials to try getting revenge for his flagrant use of tails. So while fighting for his life Pugs thought of my knife and when the time presented itself he counted coup on the biggest beaver claiming the tail that he would use to create the perfect sheath to go with Bawanna's work.
Once he had the tail to work with he cleaned it and prepped and then started cutting. A sheath. Not exactly the same as the ones done for the original IBBBs. This was a sheath for a woman. And knowing that we are picky and whiny he thought and he listened while I explained what I really wanted but why I couldn't have that because of the problem that I would have had with the sheaths he made for the guys. The fact that my waist is smaller but my hips are as wide and my rib cage gets in the way of a knife handle if it rests straight up from the belt being pushed out at the bottom by the hips. So he thought back to a task in his past where he worked with some women before and he hit upon a perfect solution. A sheath just like the ones I wanted BUT with the belt loop a little higher and a very slight cant so it pushes forward just a touch. Then with his talent fully on display he managed to mold it so that the retention is perfect. You can even bump it upside down and it won't fall out, but if you want to pull it out, it just appears in your hand. So smooth and so pretty.
But then Pugs the perfectionist was concerned. He thought the beaver had had the last laugh as he noticed there were a couple dark patches and a couple gashes on the tail, perhaps from the fight to the death. Pugs worried about those marks and worried, he mentioned them to me because in the pictures you could really see the dark areas. But as soon as I saw them, I knew they belonged there. It adds to the character of the piece, it lets you know it is natural and that even though it looks ALMOST perfect it is not because nature is not.
And once I had the finished items in my hand, I knew this knife WAS perfect, for me. Pugs and Bawanna between them have added to the work done by the skilled kami at HI. This knife is going to replace all of my daily carry sharp edged items. (not the things that go bang though) It is a work of rugged beauty. A knife that looks good but can be used for almost any task a sharp edge is needed. I fully expect that many of my friends and folks I go shooting with will be jelous of my blade. If they are really nice I might tell them the story of how it was that a near perfect blade became the perfect blade for me. Thank you Auntie, Kami (did we ever decide which kami is the new tident?), Pugs and Bawanna.
Here are a couple pictures of it with the sheath:
And it with the collection of EDCs it just replaced:
