Seeing a picture of Will's Marttiini, I fondly remembered a similar knife that I owned 47 years ago (or so).
The "dangling sheath" was perfect for hopping in and out of my '49 Fargo (in Canada - Dodge in the USA!) 1/2 ton; the knife never got in the way, but swung clear of obstacles. And that scandi-grind kept a nice edge, and cut for ever!
I expressed a desire to obtain one, and Will expressed a desire to find one for me. What he refused to do was accept payment!!
Thank you for your generosity, Will!
You are not only a main stalwart of this Forum, but a generous one!

Included was this elegant pre-Euro coin! A 1997 Markka, it's a beautiful coin.
It seems we've created our own tradition here on BF. Years ago, one would give/send a coin to the giver/sender of a knife.
Here we send a coin with a knife given! Most interesting, and also appreciated!
Thanks again, Will!

As an improvement to my poor cellphone pics, here are some added scans!
The knife is a utility tool with decent fit and finish, but it really shines in functionality!
It cuts ribbons of newsprint without a snag, and feels good in the hand! I will enjoy using this knife!

Cool beans. Looks like a great little fixed blades and probably has a lot of sentimental value attached from the get go.

Fantastically done, Will! The classic no-nonsense design of both knife and sheath would make it look right at home hanging on the pegboard of a workshop or tool shed. Congrats!

Very well done indeed, Will!:thumbup: Thanks for sharing the goodness with us, Charlie!

Glad you got it OK Charlie and that you like it, nice kind of nostalgia trip it seems. Can we see that truck, I'm interested!

Many of us miss the Markka, the banknotes were amazingly high quality, unlike the Euro notes of today and most other currencies which get tatty in a week. Mind you, the under 25s don't even use cash anymore, it's all dig-plastic. Me, I'd yearn to pay and receive in Gold :D Now that's Traditional

Thanks for all your comments, knives matter!

Well done Will :) Marttini make good knives, and that is a nice one Charlie

Congratulations on the new fixed blade, Charlie, and thanks for sharing the story with us!:cool:
Accolades to Will for his generosity, and for awakening half-century-old memories/nostalgia in Charlie! ;):thumbup:

Charlie, how big and what model is your new Marttiini? Is it a Lynx Lumberjack? Despite my vowing not to let myself get into the whole new world of fixed blades, I have a Marttiini Lynx Lumberjack on my "wish list" at a couple of dealers, thanks to Will's persuasive powers (or evil influence, depending on your perspective :D).

GT Persuasive powers or evil influence...? Be strong my friend!:D

The Lynx Lumberjack ( Jätkänvuolu) has a 10cm blade and overall length 22cm. They come in carbon or stainless. There's a smaller version but it doesn't have the useful finger notch which makes this a very safe handler. Check Marttiini.fi in English for more anguish...

You know you want to go fixed...;)

lol :D

Does the arrowhead looking dingus at the bottom of the sheath have a function or is it merely decorative?

Thanks. --Larry

Well Done Sirs

Both really. It's the fold of the leather. Inside a puukko sheath there's a liner tube of bone or more likely plastic which protects the leather from being cut open. The fold at the bottom also acts as a ventilation hole if you like. This is necessary as the sheath is a tight snug fit, you can upend one and shake it moderately and the knife will not fall out. :D

Thanks for the explanation. They seem like a practical people, so thought it must have some function. That's a very nice looking package!
