The Pre-Dawn Harvest Mission

Having gathered the intelligence needed on the previous recon of the area, and going back in near pitch black darkness under the canopy this little sample harvest was not much like frolicking through the woods gathering goodies...more like a pre-dawn assault with surgical precision. The basket came into the picture after I got home. The darkness did impose some visual limitations, but also made things more interesting.

When I was up around these fields and woods the other day I had come prepared to clear trails, whittle, and take photos, but I was, unfortunately. ill equipped for gathering things of a fragile nature. When I had left the truck that day I had a knife, a machete, a spoon, a piece of sandpaper, and a camera and that was about it.

After getting home and thinking about it a while I started wondering if I could maybe plant some of the grapes and Ocoee on my own land. I wanted to go grab some samples, and knowing how much competition there is up there for wild edibles I wanted to go soon...the problem was that Lisa had an appointment in the city this morning at 8:30 and it's right at a 40 minute drive each way to the general area where the plants are. So...I decided to go early. The gates at Prentice Cooper open at 5:00 so knowing exactly where everything was located I thought that I gave just enough time....and I was right :)

So...a quick breakfast of biscuits and gravy, and a cup of coffee at the Waffle House at 4:45, then an iced tea to go and off I went. Oh, and once again with a low battery...figures, I really need to take the time to go get another one.

I got to the general area about 5:45 and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the morning watching for the sky to lighten a little. This was a 20 second exposure of the pine trees in the area a few minutes before 6:00 am. The tips of the prairie grass stalks that were blowing in the breeze look like ghosts in the bottom of the picture.

Then, once again geared up with a machete, a Knife, a flashlight and a camera...and this time some ziploc bags...I headed into the fields. I went after the Ocoee first, and i only found one of any size. The picture sucks because the fruit was lit by both the flashlight (which btw the SOG LT-1 really puts out some light) and the flash of the camera at the same time...I learned to move quickly with getting the flash light beam out of the way as I went along.

I thought I might as well grab a sample of the thorn apple while I was there too...just for studies and NOT for eating. I can tell you these things definitely discourage picking, even green the little spines are hard and sharp.

Then it was off through a patch of woods to another field about a half mile or so away to get some of the grapes. It was funny how I saw things in the dark I hadn't even noticed in the light. I had walked within 5 meters or so of these the last trip and completely missed them...must have been looking up at the time. But when the light went across these leaves I knew what to start looking for.

Not the biggest muscadines in the world, but pretty sweet.

Then soon I found even more grapes than I had seen before.

I made it back to the truck just a few minutes after seven, you can see the haul in plastic bags there on the hood.

I just chilled for a few minutes soaking in the serenity, then secured the gear...all except the camera... and then snapped one last pic as the sun started painting the world with color... and battery light started flashing. Then I left at 7:15, exactly on schedule to be home by 8:00.

So, back at home I grabbed one of Lisa's baskets to snap a quick picture of the harvest.

I like how these shots makes nice "what's wrong with this picture" pictures...I may have to use one as part of a future give-away contest.

I love hittin the woods early. Ive been known to stroll around in the dark and show up at work and hop straight in the shower.....

That first pic is so cool. Looks like the opening shot in a horror movie!

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm not sure how much I could get away with harvesting off state land. Most of the guys that work up there have known me for years and cut me some slack when they catch me camping in "unauthorized" areas to avoid the other people, I don't want them getting mad at me. That's why i wanted to bring some home and see if I can cultivate them, though I know it takes years to produce grapes of any numbers. I already have muscadine here on my land, I need to see what I can do to help them out. Mainly I just let the squirrels eat them hoping they'll spread the seeds.

Yeah, one of it's "common" names is Devils Weed, I'm surprised it's not called Devil's B@lls lol, those friggin' spines are sharp as h#ll!

I know, I know...I gotta get another battery.

One of the things I like about working for myself is that I schedule the times and sometimes plan early morning hikes around the location of the projects, but usually I prefer to plan the hike for after work so I can go chill for a while before I go home :)

Funny how lighting and angle make all the difference isn't it>

If the camera were raised a little and turned a little to the left this would be the same shot.

My sentiments exactly! Gonna need a few more basketfuls, tho :)

I fear trying to harvest that much would get me in trouble....

That is not fair. You get to the woods at the time I leave for work. :p

Getting pics of early.. makes me want Bow season that much more..

That's funny,
Just the other day, I was hanging outside my house with some friends, when a squirrel in the tree above us dropped a devils weed/ball on us..lol
I put it to the side, away from us. The little bugger came down and took off with it again.

I wonder how they get into the center, with those spikes and all.

Cool pics mist:thumbup: Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Dennis, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I agree... it did have an ominous look to it, that's why I wanted the picture :)

Hahahaha that's hilarious. I have no idea how they get into them...but it may explain some things about squirrel behavior :)

Opens up the 25th here. Hope to get a nice doe first this year. The bigger bucks lie in southern Ohio. (Where our hunting cabin is)

Pretty sure it opens here next weekend. I know Prentice Cooper is closed for the first managed hunt next weekend and as far as I know the first managed hunt is opening day.

Ocoee?? I know its a river but there is a fruit too? I do not live too far from ya, never heard of it... need info.. also did you get the devil's balls for the hallucinagen properties? lol... seriously though, how do you prepare them for eats?

interesting read. thanks... beautiful flower. it says its native to NC as well but I have never seen it. I will start keeping my eyes open a little more and see if i can find one.. cool stuff

Cool, glad I inspired a new interest

and you reminded me to go pick some grapes. we are surrounded by muscadines. love em! the bad and good thing is, deer love em too.. i place my stands near these vines. grab a handful and up the tree i go. .. my great grandmothers house (now belongs to my cousin) is across the street from me. My great grandma planted a scuppernog vine in the middle of her yard back in the 20-30's. its still there and produces many many grapes.. cant wait for that too. good luck to you this year

Yep, I think the deer have been eating nearly as many of mine as the squirrels..but that's ok, they spread the seeds out too :)

Good luck to you too.
