Monday afternoon, I received a small package from Blues containing the following surprise:

In my recent return to Traditional knives, I quickly recognized my long affinity for jackknives. Relatively new, however, has been my fascination with barlow knives in particular.

I've learned just enough about Russell barlows and their place in American/knife history to be in awe when I opened Elliott's package. In the interests of full disclosure, when I first held the knife and considered the provenance by which it was now mine-- current friendship and untold years of Life before-- tears came to my eyes.

The real deal:

The blade is in fine condition, not polished-out as the above photographs make it appear. Here are some better views of it:

From the top, Sleek Slicer revealed:

Bolster and tang stamps:

And of course, the glorious golden-brown saw-cut bone, as seen above and in various other lighting and settings:

I am amazed at how light and sleek this knife is, comfortable in hand and unobtrusive in pocket, and am deeply moved to now have this small piece of history in my hands.

A sweet, sweet knife.

An incredible gift.

Thanks, Elliott.

~ P.

And, lest my attempted restraint in the above words fool anyone: my awe of this gift remains, but I'm also all this:

IT'S A RUSSELL BARLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is a beauty. There are iconic knife patterns that are universally known. The Russell barlow is certainly one of them.

What a generous gift!

What a great surprise! Elliott is one of the best!
Congrats on that little piece of history!

~P., congratz to that wonderful knife. It is in great condition and looks great and the stories it could tell might have been pretty interessting. A very generous gift, Elliott! :)

Thanks for sharing... I really love this place and it´s great being part of such a number of people! :)

I think all 3 of you are the "real deal"

Congrats on a receiving a neat piece of history from Elliott.

Sarah, in all honesty, giving you this knife was probably every bit as enjoyable for me as it was for you to receive it. (I will admit that I was able to keep my tears in check, however. :p)

Your images do so much more justice to this grand old knife than the ones I had posted once upon a time ever did. It looks just great.

As to the knife and it's history...I got the knife five or six years ago while I was corresponding with the gentleman who served as the historian/archivist for Russell.

He actually went so far as to purchase the knife on my behalf from an online auction site, examined it and pronounced it worthy and then shipped it to me while awaiting my payment.

He estimated the age of the knife to be early 1930's vintage and describes that model as the "benchmark Russell Barlow".

In any case, benchmark or not, it's yours now and I hope it will have another 80 plus years of good life and service ahead. Enjoy it in the best of health, Sarah.

Wow! About time this knife had it's own thread! :D I was just about to ask how you obtained it P, and it seems in the best possible way. Elliott, you are generous to a fault, that is a lovely gift, and is clearly going to be much loved. A beautiful knife that I'm sure you'll treasure forever P :)

PS Great to hear more about the history and provenance of the knife Elliott

Good on both of you, this is a great gesture and gift. But then, this place excells with that.

~P, there's one thing you have to do with this knife. Go sit in a quiet place with it, and gently hold it up tp your ear. I can only imagine what tales this knife could tell!

Carl.

I wonder if Bessie Smith was a previous owner! :D

Big thumbs up to Blues. And what a great old barlow that is. When I think Barlow I always think Russell.

Wow, that is terrific, congrats ~P!

And thanks to Elliott for the generosity, this place is totally awesome!

NICE!

I ♡ this place. :thumbup::thumbup:
