By now I gather, most of you have super premium knives --- whether the price of the knife is mostly in the handle, or the steel, or both; and some of you, I'll bet, spent 1,250 + on a single knife --- so what's my point? (Ha)
I will wager that most of our true cutting needs can be satisfied in a knife costing $75.00 USD and under. SO!
Prompt: what's the primary driving force that makes the final step to purchasing your knife? Everything is welcome, Including pictures

This is my Norseman. It is nice and slicey. It disappears in pocket. The machining and engineering that went into it is truly phenomenal. It has by far the best action I've ever experienced. It contains top-shelf materials all around. And it's Made in Canada like I am!

Sometimes there's more to the equation than just "does it cut stuff?"

I can't trust a "cheap" knife

Unless buying for investment, we all have an idea of what level of quality a certain amount of money should buy in a knife. This idea varies from person to person and changes with time, due to fashion, how deep your pockets are, or following an arch of knowledge and experience.

But marketing is a major driving force. Most YT knife channels serve this single purpose and we, as humans, are psychologically vulnerable in this way. We like to think we make the decision, but the decision is made for us in a form of a well executed commercial photograph or astroturf ad campaign.

Why not? Most of the world operates on cheap knives. What are you using in your kitchen every day?

I try to avoid the kitchen until the end.
I went to see what was found in the kitchen drawer and there were only these two, which I don't often use because the knife in my pocket is much closer.

One of my best using knives is my opinel.
But I also like, framelocks, integrals,, flippers, knives that show handmade artistry or clever machining. Primarily I want a knife to be a useful tool, I do love it when makers can make a functional tool and show some flair or style in the execution.

This brings up a different question. In our day to day lives kitchen work is probably the one thing that requires using a knife pretty much every day. Why do so many people settle for terrible kitchen knives?

100%, without a shadow of a doubt, my most used knife is my 10 inch Sabatier. I use it at least once a day, nearly every single day of life. Why some people would choose to spend hundreds of dollars on pocket jewelry they'll never use only to go home and slice their potatoes with a dollar store kitchen knife is beyond me.

I don't have any knives that hit four digits, but several that hit over two hundred kangaroo bucks. So could I go the rest of my life with an opinel or one of my other budget blades... yes/but. I can get more use, and more utility out of my knives that have a few more dollars in them and makes them suited to two or three more tasks/situations. I'm not even talking high dollar, just above that 75$usd limit. Part of the cost for me is that a lot of the folders I can carry daily have a limited market, so they are a bit more expensive because not everyone is going to carry one. Or they need to be attached to a pair of pliers, again, an added cost, but not something everyone wants.
Or I can take my camping knives, find me a knife under your limit that can even consider aussie timber and I'll be interested. 3v ain't cheap, but if I want to cut a stick where I am, there are not many steels up to the task. So in that case, yes, I can do a saw and an ax (I don't baton here, it's just not going to work, but I need something that will do shavings) But at 75 a pop that's two tools when I might have passed with one and some good stick picking.

So yeah, can it be done, sure, a cheap watch and a base model car will do, but also, sometimes you want life to be just a little nicer, and have one less thing to worry quite as much about. And nothing wrong with wanting to own and carry art. I cannot, but I do not hold it against guys who do.

... most of our true cutting needs can be satisfied in a knife costing $75.00 USD and under. SO!..

And less than half of that. I just had a friend of mine asking me to find him a sub 30€ folding knife, and, to my surprise, there are quite a few nice offerings! And that is talking about folders, if we try to find fixed blades, there are also lot's of choices available.

The last of your 3 is also for kicks 😁
Fuel air spark. Just like an engine.

In my lean years, it was a stretch to buy a Buck 110. Once I got one I used it for everything for 10 plus years. Still carry the same one daily. (40 years) I can say with absolute certainty it is the only knife I need.

Knives fascinate me and they make me happy. I can afford them. So I buy them.

Did you do the jimping on the handle butt, it turned out nice

Collector, I have a lot of knives ( Swiss knives, artisan knives, industrial knives, GEC... ) folding mainly, some have 3-digit prices without exceeding $ 300, but the one I always have on me is a Victorinox "Compact" which is enough for me every day!

Are we really doing this again?

Ok

I spent 40+ years with a Buck 303-301 in my pocket and could buy 2 ( 3 when I was a kid) for your magic 75 number. What’s your freaking point?

I worked my ass off for those 40 years and now I can and will buy the knife that feeds not just my needs but also my desires.

These do that. Quality American made excellence.

Maybe I’m just cranky this morning but lord do I get tired of the attitude the can’ts or won’ts seem to have about the cost of OUR choices.

Overall fit and finish, and a good price makes one feel they are getting a quality item. Just built right, and it does not have to be super expensive, but everyone has a different opinion of value vs price. The good thing about today is we have the freedom to choose from the many knives available on the market.
