I had a chance to get out today and put my new Kifaru (Swahili for Rhino) XRay into action. I wanted to see how it would handle a little weight, so I loaded it with all the water I could (~11lbs), some cold weather gear and tossed in my Busse SFNO (the Outlaw) for some extra weight. I also had my Bark River Gunny (the Marine
) along.
I headed up to a little lake called Gem Lake in the northern section of RMNP. It was sunny, but cold (low 20s) and windy. As the afternoon wore on a little snow moved in. (I think you can see it in the attached photos).
As you can see Gem lake was a frozen little jewel. This part of RMNP is filled with caves, I even found one that someone had converted into a shelter. Its also an attraction for rock climbers, with lots of unusual rock formations.
The XRay performed very well. It handles a relatively heavy load comfortably, and even without a waist belt is very stable. I still have to play around with some of the adjustments, but overall I was very pleased.
