I had a chance to get out today and put my new Kifaru (Swahili for Rhino) XRay into action. I wanted to see how it would handle a little weight, so I loaded it with all the water I could (~11lbs), some cold weather gear and tossed in my Busse SFNO (the Outlaw) for some extra weight. I also had my Bark River Gunny (the Marine:)) along.

I headed up to a little lake called Gem Lake in the northern section of RMNP. It was sunny, but cold (low 20s) and windy. As the afternoon wore on a little snow moved in. (I think you can see it in the attached photos).

As you can see Gem lake was a frozen little jewel. This part of RMNP is filled with caves, I even found one that someone had converted into a shelter. Its also an attraction for rock climbers, with lots of unusual rock formations.

The XRay performed very well. It handles a relatively heavy load comfortably, and even without a waist belt is very stable. I still have to play around with some of the adjustments, but overall I was very pleased.

Great pictures! Glad your XRay worked out well...Kifaru = bomb-proof for me:D

Nice Images.

That shelter looks a bit dangerous, what with the branch stubs in the entrance...

Is that a light clipped by the water bottle holder in that image? What is it?

Its actually a cheapy solar powered flashlight. Seems to work pretty well. I clip it on the pack so the battery is always getting recharged.

Looks like a nice hike....what's the elevation at the lake? I love the SFNO, that's probably my favorite Busse. Is that green linen?

not quite what i thought this thread was gonna be about...LOL:)

but, thanks for posting

:D That was the idea; I was trying to create a little mystery. It does kind of sound like the start of a joke: A rhino, an outlaw and a marine walk into a bar ...

BlackHills, the SFNO is my favorite Busse. I have three so I don't have to feel bad about using this one hard. Yes, it is green linen.

The lake is at 8830, about 1100 feet up from the trail head.
