The 2 on the left have serious but not deadly cracks in the scale at the centre pin ...is this why they were never given the scale pins like their brother on the right?

All 3 bear this scar...something has been ground off....remnants of a number can be seen...

No other markings apart from USA FS...etched on the blades...20220406_104504.jpg
So are these defects human or machine based?
Any thoughts most welcome.
Cheers.

Human I think.
I had a couple of the little ones I bought a few years ago for I think $4.99 from SMKW.
I don't know what happened to the one I kept but I gave one to my dad who used it as a beater at work, I have no clue if he still has it.

The blades weren't fully ground as thin as I believe they were supposed to be, but other than that they certainly weren't as bad as this.
They were on track to be pretty well put together actually.

Yes ..these are fully functional...juuust not finished.

Thanks for the thread, meako! I don't have an answer for you, just an observation that has nothing to do with the knives. As I lived in Utica when I was a teenager, I can pass this on. Someone from Utica is a Utican, more than one would be Uticans. Not sure if that would pertain to Utica knives or not. :D

Wiping out the tang stamps is an interesting point. Looks like they were rejects purposely made virtually unsellable. The bolsters look like they got the Cynder block treatment.
Maybe lunchbox knives secreted out of the factory by a light-fingered employee? Maybe someone went dumpster diving the scrap bin?

Did they come as a group?

Better to be a Utican than a Uticant.

[Sorry.]
