The Right knife for my Dad?

Years ago, my father always had a knife on him. It was never anything fancy, usually it was of poor quality, most of the time it was some cheap advertising for the last place he shopped.

It has been a while since he has carried, (most likely because people stopped giving knives away) and now everytime we are together, he borrows one of mine, or grabs a razor knife out of the toolbox.

So my question is this: What is the right knife to get for my father?

I figure that in order for him to carry it, it must NOT be flashy!!
It must be small.
It must not cost a lot of money (he will give it back if it is too expensive)
It must be tough, He will use it hard and not "take care" of it.

Not to say he will abuse it, but he will cut cardboard on concrete with it and not think twice about it.

Any Suggestions?

moore maker-makes a low cost good quality folder-so does queen-if you want to spend over 50$ you can look at canal street and schatt & morgan-

those are the type your dad used to carry i bet-

if you want a more modern style-spyderco , kershaw and benchmade

Sounds like my father. You might want to pick up one of the new Schrades, a cheap Case if you can find it. Maybe a SAK, you can get em cheap at Walmart. I wouldn't go with any of the swap meet knives for him, but sometimes Frost (American company, not the Swedish one) cranks out an okay slipjoint. Speaking of Walmart, the Buck slipjoints are great knives, cheap too. Maybe their big stockman. Looking at modern style folders, you can get him a Kershaw Chive or Scallion, he might like the flipper/AO.

There are tons of knives that fit the bill, but the first thing that jumped into my mind is a Sodbuster JR. by Case or the Queen Country Cousin (same pattern as the Case just a different name)

Either can be had for just a little over or under $20.00 depending on where you buy it.

I would suggest a Case Yellow Handle Medium Stockman with old school Chrome Vanadium blades. (carbon steel) 28.95 @ knifeworks.com.

Spyderco Delica4. It is great utility knife. 3" blade. If this is too big, Dragonfly than.

I got my grandfather one of the Buck chinese slipjoints from wall mart and he loves it. I have heard Rough Rider make a good cheap slipjoint as well.
If you want a modern style knife there is the Byrd folders but not the linerlocks.

Pick up an older Imperial slipjoint off ebay. Like the barlow or something. I have a couple I inherited and I love 'em. Unfortunately for me (but good for you!) their street value is rock bottom.

SAC soldier is another good choice and I like the silver much better than the red.

Get him one of many styles of Queen with D2 blade/blades. Sharpen it and present it to him and know you have given him a top notch traditional folder with good steel in it. ;)

Frosts Mora Knife Model 760. 4 1/4 " blade, Sandvik 12 C 27 steel, polypropylene handle & sheat. Costs only 12 bucks but performs like a $ 150 knife.

i will echo shrade, i have one that was about 25-30 bucks, little over 3 inche blade, and that is one sharp knife. it has held up well and been through a lot (not a very good "one hand opener" though just because it is kinda tight, but it is more praticle than a blade you can just flick open.
