I know it’s a bit premature, as the new Ritter hasn’t been released yet, but which would you choose. I can only get one “survival” knife so versatility is key. It’s intended use will be a general camp knife (food, rope, wood) but it’s always comforting to carry a knife you could bet your life on.
Swamp Rat Howling Rat
Ritter Becker BK12
Swamp Rat Camp Tramp

P.S. Are there others that should be in the running? Similar versatility, similar price range?

The Becker BK7 is a better comparison to the Camp Tramp than the Ritter design, being that it has a 7" blade, and that you can actually buy one. And for something to compare with the Howling Rat, consider the BK10.

The truth of that matter is that just about any sturdy quality knife will do the job. The rest is just mental masturbation. That being said the Camp Tramp is all around knife that will perform a wide variety of tasks. The Howler is also, but it isn't as good of a chopper. I can't really speak for the Becker line because I don't own any of them. For my dollar I'd give the nod to the Cold Steel SRK. It's has a practical profile for just about anything. Its still thick enough to pry and chop w/. It stands up well to batoning. On top of all that it is lighter and more compact that the Camp Tramp. I bought both a Camp Tramp and a Howling rat, thinking that they would perform better than my beat up old SRK....they really don't.

As a general camp knife I would carry something like the Mora 2000.

As for the Howling Rat and Camp Tramp, they are two very different knives, one is a small tough utility blade, the other a extremly durable chopper.

Assuming the BK12 has simiar geometry to the BU/7 and Combat Bowie it will cut very well and have solid durability. The handles are slick, but some like them that way.

If you wanted more chopping power, more prying ability, and the ability to seriously pound on the knife the Camp Tramp would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Ranger Knives RD9 fo shizzle. Much better than the beckers and almost half the price of Swamp Rat.

Another vote for the SRK. It is light weight, has a practical design and is inexpensive.

SRK. Much easier to carry can do small tasks better, especially if it's the only one.
