Started it last night, already done.

Incredible book, dark and depressing at times, but very solid storytelling, and even though I am not, any father that picks it up is going to be really moved.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: for this one!

I tried to read it but couldn't get into it at all. I may have to give it another shot.

Review sounds like a depressing book but I do enjoy apocalyptic fiction.

TLC, have you heard of the Ashes series by William johnstone ? Sorta campy apocalyptic fiction but enjoyable. :D

The Road is awesome. Easier to read than his other stuff, and almost LESS dark. You want to be freaked out, read "Child of God." That's dark!

Yeah, I really liked them back when they came out, Mr. Johnstone used to live near here, and in the first book, when Ben Raines goes to check on his parents after the attack, the author has them living just south of here.

He even has the right road and street names in the book.

I read that book and it left a lasting impression on me. It was a good read and it scared the hell out of me too. I kept imaging me and my son.

Wow , interesting to know :) Too bad he passed on , I liked the way he thought.

I'm going to have to get a copy of The Road.

I too read it very quickly, it was great.
Reading in the back the other books Macarthy wrote I was very pleased to see he wrote No Country for Old Men, which I can't wait to see and read.

Yeah, there was actually a "Tri-States" movement that went around for awhile based on some of his ideas about how a society should be organized. He definitely was an interesting guy!

I read somewhere that the current books that are coming out now under his name are actually written by his son.

Yeap , I was very interested in the Tri States idea back in the 90's , even went so far as to correspond with a couple of members in Washington. they had a cool message board back then.

The old BBS style boards, before widespread local internet access?

I think I visited that one a few times, and one in Texas, but long-distance bills got to high.

This is making me want to hunt down the first book and read it again! :D

Yessir , later on AOL , there was also a newsgroup if I recall correctly.

The books got a bit 'out there' towards the end , as if Johnstone ran outta idea of foes for the Rebels to fight.:D

Yeah, I stopped reading them after about 17-18, they just became the same book over and over...."clear a town of the night dweller/Zombie types and move on to the next town".

Ever get into any of his "horror" novels? They were sorta generic, but fun. "Ex-CIA/SpecOps" guy, is now a small town minister (who just happens to have access to all kinds of weaponry), fights to keep the minions of Satan out of his town with bullets when bibles don't do it! :D

Sorta silly, but it's cool to read an author that is 110% pro-gun and stuff.

BTW, the first book "Out Of The Ashes" was re-released in paperback yesterday! :D

I have one of Johnstones horror novels about a wolfman or something. hmm whats the name...
Hunted.

My favorite Johnstone book is called Breakdown , I loved this book during the time period it came out ( those dark Cli**on years ) :D

And ~! after seeing his email address 'dogcia@etcetc.com" I recall emailing Mr. Johnstone before he passed on telling him how much I enjoyed his Ashes books.

TLC,

Have you read "Blood meridian or the evening redness in the west"? Not sure but i think it's the first novel written or published by Cormac McCarthy. Amazing.

dantzk.

The Road was a great read....I went through pretty quick as well.

I have one of Johnstone's novels "The Last of the Dog Team" in e-book format if anyone is interested.
