I just read Cormac McCarthy's book The Road (click for Wiki) about a month ago, it was pretty good. It's about a father and son making their way south after an apocalyptic cataclysm destroys the world...

Here is the trailer for the movie which is coming out soon, starring Viggo Mortensen (he impresses the heck out of me more and more with each new role).

One of the most terrifying and thought-provoking books I've read. I hope the movie does it justice, and doesn't degenerate into a mere action flick.

Rumor has it that McArthy's Blood Meridian is in the works for a movie version. That book is his masterpiece.

That looks fantastic. I love trailer. So, you guys all seem to recommend the book? I will have to look for it.

Be prepared to be haunted by that book particularly if you have small children. McArthy's writing, in THe Road and others, blows me away.

i just finished it monday, a beautifully written book, definitely a classic, recommended by my wife... Definitely has a powerful impact if you have children
The movie was directed by An Aussie named John Hilcoat who directed the Excellent Aussie Western The Proposition, i have my fingers crossed that they dont screw the story up here:) Good Director Good Cast Great Story lets hope hollywood stays outta the way:thumbup:

I agree -- it is a tough and haunting read if you are a parent. I am a little worried by the trailer that they've turned into an action movie. I also found it inspirational in terms of the amount of love and willingness to sacrifice that is required being a parent - that was the real story of the book for me.

The trailer looks cool. I think I'm going to have to pick up this book and give it a read.

Sort of reminds me of Robert McCammon's Swan Song book. Very good book.

Really good book, and such a timely thread. I finished the book not 20 minutes ago :) Looking forward to the movie, and another of his books now that someone mentioned it.

One of the most illogical end of the world novels I've ever read. Pretty much a total waste of time even if Oprah did recommend it!

Oprah recommended the book? Never will read it then.

But the movie looks interesting, though.

Thanks for the heads up.

One of my favorite books and authors

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to go get the book before the movie comes out.

I was very disappointed when it did not come out around last Thanksgiving and then they said it would be out after the New Year...and then they said October 16, 2009. (!)

The reason I wanted to see the movie was because Viggo Mortensen doesn't usually take stupid roles and the material interested me. I was warned that the movie, "No Country for Old Men" was unrealistic and goofy with a suppressed shotgun and some type of portable impact hammer being used by a professional assassin so I didn't really care if they changed McCarthy's book, "The Road" around if it didn't have goofy stuff in it from the book.

I don't know if that stuff I cited was in the book "No Country for Old Men" or not but I was wrong to judge the book, "The Road" by the movie "No Country for Old Men." I am right at about page 191 in "The Road" as I purchased it a few days ago. It's an excellent book, an incredible book and easy to see how McCarthy won The Pulitzer for it. It doesn't matter what his personal beliefs are and the rest of the book would have to be totally stupid for me to change my opinion on it this far in.

More than anything...I have not reached the end of the book, but it eliminates a shortcoming my brother has pointed out many times about apocalyptic books and movies...sometimes the end is not good. Sometimes it really is the end of the world and this book at about page 191 doesn't look like it's getting any better for Father and Son.

It's a great book- I really enjoyed it. As much as you can "enjoy" a book about that subject matter. It's awesome from a W&SS perspective, and for those who dig apocalyptic fiction in general. The trailer overplays the mother's role in the story- she's only mentioned once or twice in the whole book. Here's hoping they don't expand her role and try to turn it into some sort of stupid love story. The book has nothing to do with the mother, it's all about the bond between father and son, and them vs. what's left of humanity (and the world).

It could be a cool movie.

I don't think Charlize Theron, however you spell her name, has a large part in the movie.

From the Wikipedia article on the film (here)...

# Charlize Theron as the Wife, who appears in flashback. Theron joined the film because she was a fan of the book and had previously worked with producer Nick Wechsler on the 2000 film The Yards.[4] The character will have a larger role in the film than she did in the book. Hillcoat said of the expanded role, "I think it's fine to depart from the book as long as you maintain the spirit of it."[5]
