Namaste all:

Yangdu and I have been busy catching up on family and friend gossip--who got married, who had children, who went where and is doing what, who left thier bodies, and I have not been able to give you all information that you may want to know. Forgive me for this but I have not seen Yangdu for two years and she has not been back home since 1991 so she is very curious about friends and family.

The day I left I appointed the Royal Kami to the position of shop foreman. He is the best kami we have and is an old man who knows much. Further, he is a good man and will be able to offer a lot of help and good advice to my son, Gelbu, who still has a lot to learn. I instructed Gelbu to listen to him closely and follow his good advice.

Last night when we spoke with Gelbu I found out his name. It is Lal Bahadur Bishwakarma but everybody will still call him "Bura", including me, and he is the newphew of Ganga Ram Bishwakarma who is in charge of making the Ganga Ram specials.

Being the Royal Kami has honor but the work is far from steady. The king and his top aides only need a few khukuris. Now Bura will have steady work and if the king wants a khukuri made we will simply do it in shop 2. Perhaps we have accidentally become the Royal Arun (shop)!

We received a parcel of nice village khukuris yesterday and Bill jwai will be putting some pictures of them here in the next day or two. And I have a couple of surprise items, also.

A very informative update.

Is this Bishwakarma family an entire family of kamis?

Is Ram Bahadur Bishwakarma the same man as the royal kami Bura?

Questions, questions...

Nice to have such experience to draw on. You seem to be attracting skilled craftsmen, Pala.

Your son is fortunate to have such men to learn from.

Namaste.

Daveji, Bishwakarma is the name of steel working kamis. There are thousands of them. Sunar is the name of gold working kamis. Sun (soon pronounciation) means gold. There are a great many Sunars, also.

Ram Bahadur Bishwakarma is a completely different man that Lal Bahadur (Bura).

Every Sherpa, about 250,000 of them, is named either Sherpa or Lama for a last name. It is sort of like your Jones and Smith name here.

Everybody in the shop calls me simply "Pala." I think some do not know my real name and that is okay.

Bigji, I am not saying this to brag. Please understand this. I am saying this because it is true. Our shop pays at least twice the wages of any shop in Nepal and we offer fringe benefits that other shops do not. The word has spread quickly throughout Nepal and every morning I have four or five kamis asking for work. My great regret is I do not have enough work for all of them but I am trying my best to change this.

As for my son, Gelbu, when he was a teen ager he thought he knew everything. Now as a young man he has realized he actually knows very little. This is the beginning of wisdom and he is now willing to learn. I am very pleased with this and I believe Gelbu will do a good job. He has fine men to help him and he is willing to listen to them and learn.

Namaskar Kami Sherpa!

Very kind of you to clear up my confusion.

For a while I was thinking _Ram_ Bahadur Bishwakarma was the royal kami, but in reality Bura is actually _Lal_ Bahadur Bishwakarma.

I think I have it now...I hope!

Dave, you are right on.

For those unfamiliar with the term "Namaskar" it is a more respectful version of Namaste -- usually reserved for elders and others deserving of respect.
