Debating on buying the RTAK 2, just have some concerns about it. The review I watched by nutnfancy on youtube featured an old blade with I believe 1095 steel which gave great praise, now its made with 5160 and I see a review on amazon saying it chipped after some batoning.

Is this blade going to last me my whole life? I've heard things about Ontarios heat treatment, sometimes its great sometimes its terrible, and I don't want to end up with a sub-par blade as I intend on really putting it to use building some new deer blinds/shelters this year.

If someone that owns it could give me an overall of the knife, i'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi JS,

I'm not going to say too much here, since my opinion is obviously biased, but I wanted to let you know a couple things.

The steel going from 1095 to 5160 is an upgrade. While neither should chip, 5160 should be even more resistant.

This knife should absolutely last you your whole life. If for any reason it doesn't last for a literal lifetime, let us know and we'll replace it. We've heard stories of OKC knives passing down through generations.

I've owned mine (5160) for approx 3 years and use it a lot for battoning firewood mostly, and some chopping while camping/hiking so I don't have to carry an axe. It has performed very well for these tasks and I have no complaints. It's even bent a few times when knots were encountered but sprung back to shape after retrieval from the log.

The blade coating is scarred and worn off in places but I wipe it w/WD40 or Rem Oil after use and have had no rust/corrosion issues. I've never been able to get a razor edge on this steel like some other steels, but it does gets adequately sharp for the uses I mentioned. I've also had exemplary warranty customer service from Ontario re: replacements (not the RTAK 2...a Rat 2)...really a great company and friendly people.
