well, it's not quite george foreman and muhammad ali but i decided to go for another snow hike in jungle habitat with two heavy hitters, the bk-2 and my new gransfors bruks axe. i didn't take that many pics this time since i already covered most of it on my previous hikes there: a machete got lost and now having fun in the snow, a little mountain biking and hiking...so, straight to the good stuff!

this time i came prepared with new snow shoes and actually got deep inside for once. i was hesitant at buying snow shoes at first thinking i'll only go on a handful of winter hikes and then winter is done but i realized what good is having all those knives, bug out kits, etc. if i can't even walk 5 blocks away from home due to all the snow :o

what a peaceful view, you say? all that snow is actually hiding one of the gnarliest mountain bike trails in the state. this is only one of the few trails where i refuse to ride it without a full face helmet and pads on.

now onto the pile of wood. i only wanted enough wood to boil 2 cups of water for my lunch but well...the axe and the bk-2 got carried away!

here's where the magic...err, chopping happened. i need to work on my woods identification skills. all i know is this wood had the perfect hardness yet big chunks of wood were flying all over the place per swing. it produced some awesome looking feather sticks too with my not-exactly-shaving-sharp bk-2 (it's been kinda neglected for a bit in favor of more "bushcrafty" knives as of late) but i guess she didn't mind the vacation one bit. i've gotten used to ironwood all over here that i didn't realize i didn't even curse once while chopping all that wood until now :D

tick...tock...tick...tock...

alright, i was getting really hungry and got impatient so i set the pot directly on the fire to speed up the melting. lesson learned - even with all that snow around, i'd still rather carry enough water in my pack as if it was summer. melting snow might look good on paper but it takes a tremendous amount of firewood/work to melt it that if i'm already dehydrated i'd be that much closer to the edge of critical before i get my first sip.

...carrying 3 liters of water alone already puts my pack off of the ultralight territory so what the heck, might as well carry 5...or 8 knives too :p

That looks obscenely fun. :D Hope you enjoyed yourself. Thanks for the pictures. Makes me want to head out:)

gotta get me more [some] dirt time...

Excellent pics.

the bK2 is awesome

yes it is. the reason i wish the bk-9's handle is as thick as the bk-2: winter gloves. the ergonomic grip and tactile feedback were still there. most knives i handle with gloves on feel like neckers.

Great photos. Lesson learned on the snow melting. Your BK-2 looks great.

thanks. how about a gransfors bruks vs. wetterlings hackfest next? :p

definitely tons of fun! one advantage of hiking on the snow is you can go off trail with little risk of getting lost. kinda changes the view on an otherwise same-old trail.

what is this you call dirt? oh you mean that brown stuff that i last saw in mid-december :(

Looks like you had a good time. I've been thinking about making some snow shoes, but just haven't had the time to do it.

if you do make snow shoes, document it since esee is currently holding a contest.

I just saw that, but I have two problems; not a gold member, and not in the pack. :( But when I do make them I will try to document it and share it with yous guys in the Becker forum  and I'll make sure to include a pic of my Becker also :D

Hey JV3....

Looks like a great fun time....Lovely pictures too....Thanks for the post.......

Looks like a good time JV3!

I think one of our most treacherous trails here is so bad because it is covered with loose, flat rocks that love to skip out from underneath your tire. That alone wouldn't be so bad, but the fact that you are two feet from the edge of a cliff is what really makes it a dangerous place, especially the downhill stretches where you can pick up some decent speed.

So of course I can't wait to get back out there. :D

Looks like a good time! FYI, UL nuts don't include water or food in the weight of their packs, so when hear an UL guy say his pack weighs 6 lbs, that's without perishables.

Yes, but if I recall correctly, it's only for Gold or above.

missed that one. it's almost march anyway...i'm holding a contest for my 1k post and 1-yr anniversary...lots of prizes to be won

Looks like a great outing!

thanks!

thank you for designing such capable knives!

Great pics.
What is the length of that axe.

thanks. it's a scandinavian forest (2 lb head, 25" handle).

yup, it's exactly like that! the pointy rocks doesn't scare me as much as the 10' drop and then landing on the rocks that scares me. someone needs to design a full-body airbag for us mountain bikers :D

ah, good to know. two weeks ago i weighed it and my pack is 27 lbs with the heaviest items being 4 liters of water, junglas, lite machete, bhk bushcrafter, and bk-2. without water or knives, my pack is around 10 lbs...i guess i don't over pack but more of a knife-nut than anything.

looks like you had a fun time
great pics

thanks, man. i'm hiking this sunday with a couple of forum members...there will be an axe vs. machete vs. chopper vs. folding saw informal testing...and lots of first aid kits brought along just in case :D

Excellent pics and blade use. Looks like you had a ton of fun. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
