The "S" is a winner!

First impression is that I am VERY impressed. The folks in Taiwan did a beautiful job on these. Very well finished, with a good solid lockup. Plus, they feel very comfortable and totally secure in my hand.

Think a cross between the "Q" and the original "R" that combines the best features of both, then improves on them.

Size comparison with the Calypso Jr and Delica...

Comparison with the "Q", the family resemblence is obvious, but the materials, and lock are much better.

Comparison with the "R2", quality and materials are quite similar, as are the all screw construction, 50/50 choil and traction grooves. I actually like the finer groove on the "S" even better.

Some shots by itself, open and closed. Note that the "rainbow" colors seen on the blades in several of them are just reflections from my tie-dyed t-shirt. Note also that in the bird's eye view of them closed, the silver one is at a slight angle which makes the blade appear rather badly off center, when in reality it is centered as well as that of the black one.

The large flat headed pivot screw is, IMHO, the best looking screw pivot on any Spydie to date. The rest of the screws are also flat headed giving the "S" a very well finished look. The barrel bolt retainer for the clip screw is an excellent, and in my opinion superior, alternative to the screws used on many other wire clipped models recently as it allows inclusion of a lanyard hole.

Will just add that I hope a solid blade version appears later. I think a solid blade is more practical, and is certainly easier to clean. That's important to me, since food prep probably accounts for 75% or more of my use of a pocket knife.

I always thought it looked just like a skeletonized salsa. Any way we could get pictures of it with the Salsa, so that I can see the differences?

Very nice pictures and thanks for putting these up. The "S" knife is smaller than I had thought. However, it appears to be well executed from the pictures. That Delica (I assume the knife on the right is the Delica) is stunning looking. Is this a standard model or, is this a custom handled knife?

Again, those are great pictures.

Thanx Paul,

Great pics.

Hi J859...

Very astutue. The "S" was originally to be the "Salsa2" It's narrower (top to bottom), no "hood". Otherwise, very similar pattern (some ergo refinements). We felt it would be more sucessful skeletonized like the "Q / R". It's more ergonomic than the "Q", stronger and quite light.

Would be glad to, but I don't own a Salsa, so you'll have to wait till someone who does receives an "S".

Very well excuted it is. Am guessing you may have read Kristi's original post on the "S" with the error in blade length.

It started life as a standard "Generation 3" all stainless, AUS-6 Delica. Clip holes were filled by a gunsmith, then both sides engraved for me by Marcus Hunt, in England. Have had it just under two years. Unlike most engraved Delicas you see, this one is not done with soft metal overlays soldered to the handle. The engraving is cut directly into the steel handle, so it is quite durable and also provides excellent traction. I don't abuse it, but I do occasionally carry and use it.

I'm pretty excited about this model. The R is one of my favorites, but the Q never did it for me that much due to it's handle material. This seems to be the best of both worlds from a size and handle perspective. How big was the run? Is this a sprint or a model that I can find at my leisure from a dealer?

Should be standard production I believe. NGK still had a few left last I checked. Might be gone by now though.
