According to Cap'n Atli's post over in SFI, the Longship Company's long awaited new ship, the "Sae Hrafn", is due to arrive in Solomon's Island, MD, on Saturday, July 16, 2005. "Sae Hrafn" means "Sea Raven". She is 39' long and draws 2' of water less her steering board, which draws 4'. She carries 12 12' oars rowed through ports in the top strake.

More suited for Gadgets & Gear so off it goes. And don't question me as to why....you know why! ;)

The Sae Hrafn has been seen in Oklahoma City at Noon today, headed East. She is on schedule to arrive by Saturday.

The latest news is that it has been seen in western Virginia.

We understand that the CB chatter has been rather interesting. "Migod! I musta been drivin' too long. I just saw a viking boat sailing down the road!" :)

The ship pulled into the marina at Solomon's Island, Maryland, today. Here is the report from one of our member who was there to welcome her.

I just got back from the marina. Sae Hrafn is there and in one piece.

What a beautiful ship! I took an oar and set it, and dry-rowed it to get the feel.
The closest thing I have to compare is the Glad, which some of us had the pleasure of rowing in 2000. The oars are LIGHT. They move EASILY. This ship is going to fly!

I took lots of photos, however I still use film so it'll be awhile until they're scanned in.

Also, she smells very nice, probably nicer than she'll ever smell again

The oar blades are narrower than the oarports so we can set oars form inboard.
This is going to change out procedures a bit.

Of course, there is still work to be done. The ship must be painted and caulked as well as rigged. But we have it at last!

'just saw a viking ship' I have to tell you a funny story .Some years back we were watching tv an saw an ad for 'Viking' cigars which featured a viking ship sailing in NY harbor. My mother [her parents from Norway] said " I saw it , I saw it ,but I didn't tell you because you would have said I was crazy !!" She was probably right ! She had seen the viking ship in the harbor the day they were filming the ad !! We lived in a neighborhood that had a large percentage of norwegians .
