Just got in a SAK workchamp. Could this be the ultimate in survival tools?

Just got a Workchamp. It is a dandy large folder, but I am a little spoiled by the SwissTool. I am partial to all the locking blades on the multi-tool. Still, there is something special about the WorkChamp.

I am a combo man myself and this is one of the ultimate combos, the SAK Atlas and the GB Mini. I do like these bigger locking blade SAKs with their contoured handles.

I ,too, believe that the SAK / ax combo is a winner.
There just isn't much you can't do in urban or wilderness
environment with that combo.

Does the Workchamp have the same style lock as the Rucksack, with the sliding button on the side? If so, that's probably as close as I could come to *MY* version of SAK "perfection". If they changed the small Phillips for a small pen blade, and switched the pliers for the magnifying glass, then it would be perfect. Still, I may just get a Workchamp because as much as I like my SwissChampion, the larger, more robust blades on the 111mm frame, plus the locking main blade, are sure nice. Of course, then I'd need to get a new sheath as well. I've been looking at the new nyln sheaths BQM is selling for $15.00, and they're just the right size to make a nice mini-kit centered around a large SAK. How much does the Workchamp run? And thanks for the pic; just when I was sure I'd found the perfect SAK. :~}

Where did you get the WorkChamp and the Atlas? Price?
Also on the Sak site a WorkChamp XL is listed. It has more stuff
and is a larger handfull.
As far as i know they lockup like a rucksak model.<><

frediver,

Try www.swiss-knife.com for a great selection of SAKs that aren't imported into the US. Their prices and service are great. HooDoo, BAHDog, chad, and I have all dealt with these folks and nary a complaint yet - except their taking all of our money and are currently eyeing our first born children.

Well that's intersting... The picture of the "workchamp" looks exactly like my SAK the vendor labeled as "Tinkerer". Bought it about 3 years ago, in Switzerland! You'd think they'd know their own model names... :confused:

Thanks for the info on the lock, frediver. At the time I bought my SwissChampion, I was actualy planning on getting the Workchamp, but found my SwissChampion locally at a great price, so I got it instead. Then, luckily, I'd forgotten all about lusting after the Workchamp. Then Robert H. had to go and post this thread, and get me all het up again. Now I'm in the process of figuing out how to pay for a new SAK, just when I was all hapy with the one I have. I got my SwissChampion (different from the SwissChamp because mine *doesn't* have the pliers) at Wal-Mart for $40.00. They'd had it in their display case so long that they were practically giving it away, so I couldn't pass up on the bargain; I'd always wanted the "pocket tool box" SAK. PLus, I walked out the store with the knife in my pocket instead of waiting for the mail to bring me a new toy. I'm a sucker for instant gratification.

Must...Get...WorkChamp. Vital...to...survival, Spock? Spock?

V-Shrake, I'll get you a deal on one if you want. They are the best.

Kirk out.

Thanks for the offer, Robert. I'm actually debating with myself about this right now. (does that mean I have multiple personalities, or should I just give in to the voices?) On the one hand I really like my Champion, with all the blades and extra tools; even if they aren't used all the time, they're all handy one time or another. On the other hand, the 111mm SAK's have much sturdier blades, as well as being longer. I noticed that there's a lot more flex in the saw on my Champion than on the Rucksack I used to have.

I figure that if I was going to have just one folder for all time, I'd get the Workchamp for the extra robustness of it, but since I always carry a Mora #1 around my neck to do the heavy work the main blade of my Champion can't do, I'll stick with what I've got. Of course, this is subject to change as I get the "itch" to buy another blade. When the "itch" strikes I can always justify a new knife purchase. :~}

Where do you get all those great pics of Kirk? I must admit that even though the show was mainly a poorly done Greek morality play, I still really enjoyed the original Star Trek, despite the fact that *every* alien they met spoke perfect Earth English, slang intact, and most of the "M" class planets they came across had societies amazingly similar to 1964 Earth. ;~}

Careful research, and much looking. James Tiberius is elusive, but every once in a while I find a great pic. The original Star Trek is the best of a social commentary that I think only Sci Fi could have broached. They dealt with all the major issues at the time, and usually worked them out with close combat. That's the ideal world right there. If we had leadership like Kirk in the country, Bush and Osama would meet in an arena and fight it out. The question is, could Bush launch the running double drop kick and follow it up with a chop to the neck? I think not. Politicians today could never lead, let alone build a bamboo diamond firing cannon out of basic elements. When fighting with the short sword becomes a leadership skill again. The country will be intact. Until then we dangle at the mercy of sniveling bureaucrats, and just wait for the next Kirk to show up.

James T. Kirk, space Lothario. :~} How did he ever get any exploring done, what with all the beds he was jumping in and out of? Nothing gets a man 'tang like his own starship. Beats a Ferrari any day.

Robert,

now I have an image of Bush and Bin Laden in a pit on Vulcan fighting, witht hat music that was playing when Kirk and Spock went at it!

Robert; Travis,
How does the Victorinox WorkChamp feel in the hand at 2.9 cm or 1.14 in. thick? Although I already know the Rucksack or Pocket Service tool is a bit much in the pocket, do you feel you can carry it in the pocket? Thanks.

I am trying to decide between the Hercules at 26 mm or the WorkChamp at 29 mm. It might be better to have the file seperate so it can also be used on the SAK, but I find I use a file a lot, e.g. scraping sparks on a ferrocerium rod, a rough spot I don't want to get snagged on, etc. If you are using a machete, the file should also come in handy.
Donald.

I like it. I carry the workchamp in my left pocket normally.
it feels fine in the hand as well.

I too like the Workchamp...with a braided lanyard of 550, it is quickly becoming my favorite carry knife for the field...hiking, Archery Field Courses, etc..

EDC in the office, I use my SAK One Handed Trailmaster.

I carry mine in a pouch on my belt. It's a great tool, just too bulky for me to keep in my pocket..
