This one just screamed brute when I drew it up, so I nicknamed it the "Sasquatch" bowie.
My original plan was to use some nice Ironwood on it, but I couldn't find any I liked, so I went with some old dry Ebony from mark at Burls source.
It has some really nice subtle figure that really pops with the 2500 grit finish. The handle is quite polished, even though it looks a bit flat in the picture.
The Blade is some of Ado's 1075, that I clay coated and polished for a very active hamon.
Oal is 13 3/4" with about an 8" blade.
Here are a few Wip pics that I snapped as I was making it. finished pics to follow.

It is the top one in this pic

Here it is hardened, hand rubbed to 1000 grit and my makers mark etched.

After the etching process its time for polishing.

This is where the magic really happens

The handle glued on and roughed out.

The handle is finished at this point, so I mummify it so its protected when go to sharpen the blade.

That's a real nice tapered tang there, and the copper pins stand out nicely against the dark wood.

This is maybe a guardless fighter, but calling it a bowie is a stretch imo....it's a good looking guardless fighter.

That is a classic Western style hardening line you produced, and you did it well.

Very well done, I agree with Steven, more a guard less fighter.

Thanks gentlmen!
Kevin and Steven, thanks for the kind words! To me the shape of the blade is why I said "bowie", I agree that it could be called a guardless fighter.
I am curious what would define a "Bowie" vs. a "fighter"? Is it a length of blade thing?

Hi Ben,

A bowie almost always has a wide blade with a belly towards the tip, in best form it is equally fast and suited towards a chopping motion of cut....snap cuts are common with many styles of bowie usage and a fighter is usually not balanced towards that bias.

There is a lot more, Joe Paranee is actually an expert on this subject, that of fighter vs. bowie, perhaps you can draw him out to expound, he might be more straightforward in his explanation than I am capable of.

Thanks Steven, I will have to do a bit of research on styles and designations. I appreciate the input.

I decided to try something new (for me) on the sheath for this one. I went with a Pappy' Long style baldric sheath system. This is my first try doing any kind of harness or strap work. It is all hand stitched and I am pretty pleased with how it came out. I carries like dream, and is very comfortable. Here are some pics, let me know what you think.

Very nice work on the sheath, Ben. That little U shaped converter does work like a charm and it's a really stable carry as you know. You make me smile!

Paul

Thanks very much Paul, I need to break down and buy your DVD's so I don't have to reverse engineer them by looking at pics online. :D

Joe, I will probably put a few more rings on the next one I do, to accommodate more carry positions. The U strap in the back does allow for some angle adjustment, but not all the way horizontal.
