The scent of an Emerson...

Recently purchased my first emerson (cqc-7) after months of looking/reading/shopping and I must say I was really impressed when I opened the box and bag... My first thought was "Wow", my second thought was "My God! What is that intoxicating smell?". Seriously, I bought a new 2012 model and it must have been shipped hot off the presses because it smelled like a machine shop. I've actually read a few other people touching on this aspect as well, and I must say I've never considered the "scent" of a blade to have any bearing on my overall opinion (and in this case love) of a knife... until now.

Does anyone know what it is? I have never experienced this with another knife. I have a feeling its volatiles coming from fresh G-10. I swear Ernie could bottle this stuff and sell it as the ultimate man cologne.

While the scent has slowly faded after a few months of pocket carry, I soon found myself pulling the trigger on a mini 15. The first thing I did when I got the package was open it with my 7 and smell the knife. I kid you not.

Anyone else know what i'm talking about here? Its quite intoxicating.

Lol I agree you need help but I'm not gonna be the one to give it to ya and never noticed it with my Emerson's but then again I got em at gun shows about a year after they were made

One of my friends is a firm believer in taking a good whiff of whatever new luxury purchase he's made. He says it adds to the unboxing experience. I recommended therapy when he shoved his face into a newly opened videogame box and deeply inhaled.

Yeah, like I said, the scent fades after some carry time, and both knives i've bought have been brand new 2012 models as soon as they are shipped. I know of at least two other knife people mentioning this; one in a youtube review and another in an article about visiting Emerson's shop in CA. They really do smell wonderful, like a working machine shop. Maybe a memory from my youth or something because it triggers a response. For me its like the proverbial 'cherry on top' of an already nice blade.

I do need help, chalk up another victim to the emerson bug.

That's actually how Ernie has captivated the market. It's like Pavlov's dogs; you buy it, smell it, want another. The quality is innate to men, who appreciate all things awesome.

So the next time you're getting your car fixed at the shop, please don't be alarmed if you find yourself thinking of a CQC-8, or another 7.

Same thing happens with me and watches - as I usually buy divers with rubber bracelets. Most of mine smell of vanilla, and you can just imagine how that one has gone for me.
