The search for the perfect multitool

Most have a blade as part of the package. But yes, for me multi-tools are like the Leatherman's, SOG, Gerber, and Victorinox that you primarily would carry on your belt.

Yes and no.

There are key chain sized tools with pliers but, IMO, none match the thin carry, huge tool selection and fantastic scissors of the Micra.

Leatherman makes the Squirt PS4, but is is wider and has fewer and smaller tools.

Leatherman also makes the Style PS but is both bigger and has a lot less tools.

Gerber makes the Dime but it is both longer, wider and some complain it doesn't have the quality.

My solution is to carry a Micra and to keep larger MTs nearby like in the car dashboard, the EDC backpack or on the shop bench. I carry a Squirt on backpacking trips where I need small pliers for little weight, but I find I just don't need pliers near as much as I end up using scissors on a day in, day out basis. YMMV obviously.

Great info for the OP. Saves me the time typing basically what you said. :D If the OP just want's the scissors instead of the knife out of need and not restriction than I would say the PS4 would be a great option to look into. I really like the PS4, but carry the PS quite often and think its a great tool, but for the OP's uses he might need a larger tool selection.

I dont think there's a perfect multitool. All multitools are compromises by definition (to me). You just need to analyze your needs vs. your wants vs. where you're willing to compromise.

On that note, I do think that the Leatherman PS might be the closest thing youre looking for. Main tool is the pliers, with a scissors substituted for a knife.

I suggest the Leatherman Micra it is a good Multi Tool with a good pair of scissors and it has a knife blade.

I have a micra, or 3, and has tried the ps4 with pliers, honestly pliers that small were not a great benefit to have around for my own use, but it was well made and just as fun to have around, give ti a try.

I know what you mean. I couldn't even crack a stubborn pistachio shell with my Squirt pliers, nor for that matter a Style PS, which I had hopes for because of the extra leverage. They do come in handy sometimes to grab stuff, like the lip of a collapsible filler tube inside a gas can (yesterday), but overall not a lot of utility for me. Other people with different lives may disagree. However, despite its not very hand friendly design, I still believe the Micra is the most useful keychainer of them all. The Squirt, despite outside opening implements, was no improvement. My wife, on the other hand, refuses to even touch a Micra, preferring a Squirt S4. For what she uses it for, it's good enough. I gave her mine and don't miss it.
