I have the Sear's 1hp grinder - great tool.

But I really wanted variable speed/reversable. So I'm setting up a KMG. Last night I made an interesting discovery.

The 2hp DC treadmill motor I bought will fit in the Sears grinder! Same case length, same shaft size, double shaft, keyway, everything. The only thing needed would be some shims under the case.

Please don't tell my wife. It took a while to talk her into the KMG.

Thought I'd pass this info on - would have been an excellent option for me.

steve is the motor a lesson from american sci,? they run fast. are you using step pulleys or a controller?

Larry,

Yup it's the Leeson motor from American and it does run fast. The motor is rated 120vdc 4800rpm. Here's what I've done:

The controller only goes to 90vdc, that should be about 3600 rpm.

I have a 2" pulley for the motor and 2" and 3.5" pulleys that will fit the grinder. So, should the 2" be too fast I can step down with the 3.5"

At this point I really don't know what to expect. Thanks so much for asking. I need all the advice I can get!

Steve

BTW I bought their "Suck it up" motor http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm?subsection=18&category=175 to build a permanent shop vac. Only $15 and boy does that thing suck!
