i am impressed by the hi seaxs, but not so with there sheaths for the seax.
they are very rough and ready and not of the proper configuration. ??

they should be made as the old seax sheaths were made with a throat on the opening of the sheath so you dont have to worry about stickin yor self when replacing the seax . http://www.regia.org/seax.htm as in these pics on this site. as you can see the whole seax is supported including most of the handle.makes for easy replacement and makes it harder to fall out of the sheath.
having the sheath this way also balances the whole rig nicely when attatched to your belt whether worn in front or behind your back as was very common in the saxon days. made for a concealed back draw as a last resort weapon when it came to close quarters fighting. many wearers of the seax were spearmen and archers and the seax was best worn at the back so as not to get in the way of the main weapon being used. :)
i have a sheath of this design for my seax, and it is amazing how easy it is to sheath the seax as you just place the tip of the knife in the opening then sort of throw slide it in, if you get my meaning :p the throat guides the seax in . SEE THE PICS OF THE BEUTIFULL SEAX ON THE THREAD

If you can get sketches and suggestions in order I'll be happy to send them over to the village sarki. Or a sample would be even better. He has never seen a Seax before let alone a scabbard for one and I'm sure would not be offended with a little help.

thanks bill i wasant being funny or anything its just they do such a great seax it seems a shame not to have them produce a sheath worthy of same.
the proper style of sheath would please your sarki as its so simple to make you basicly lay your seax on a sheetof leather draw round it flip the blade over and draw round it again ending up with a side by side copy of the seax,
sort of spear shaped. you then fold it in half, along the seam you put a piece of brass, silver, ect, runnig the full length of the seam.and rivet in place all along and then attatch the hanging straps and hey presto a period seax sheath. :p :) :D as in this link http://www.regia.org/seax.htm

another fine example of the beutifull seax sheath and step by step instructions how it was made, how to make :) www.jomsb.org/Dirk/Seax/Seax.htm

I sent over a paper version of that very sheath with the wood model.....also included that photograph and others exactly like it.

Just goes to show that they kamis do what they understand best.

Now, if someone were to make a new sheath for it based on this traditional design and have that sent over.....it would probably come back right.

i reckon so and what a combination the hi seax would be then, excellent knife excellent sheath. :)

I agree a great knife, but a not so great sheath. Now that I've seen your post I would like to take a crack at making my own sheath. Does anyone know of where I could buy good quality sheath leather?

Where in the world are you?
:D

You'll have to know more about your project
to decide which leather you need.
Thickness etc

You need toolable / moldable
to make sheath like shown in above links.
Not all leathers are.

www.springfieldleather.com
has helpful staff

Many other web sites.

www.tandyleather.com

Tandy Leather also has some storefronts.

Check Yellow Pages for leather.
