Hi all,

I was wondering what methods you all use to sharpen / touch up your Sebenzas.

Also, is there anything else a new owner should know? ;)

Many thanks!

Hi Brent,

Lately I've been using the DMT system. I used a black magic marker to darken the edge bevel on both sides to make sure I got the angle right. Oh, and you want to make sure that the distance from the guide pivot to the point is the same as the distance from the pivot to the edge when you are attaching the guide.

It's wonderfully sharp and a total pleasure to use!

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is easy to use and does a great job of maintaining a keen edge on the blade.

Thanks all!

harrydog,

I use the EdgePro too for most of my sharpening needs. Do you find that the thumbstud gets in the way any?

Happy Tax day!

Here's something else you can try, which is really simple and hard to do wrong:

Buy some 600 grit SiC sandpaper at the hardware store. Then put it on something somewhat flexible, like rubber, leather or a mouse pad.

Put the blade and strop it, increasing the angle until you just feel it "bite" the paper. Alternate and keep lightening, and you should end up with a way to maintain your convex edge bevel, without much burr trouble. This method works so well on my Talon, I decided to try it on the Sebenza today -- and it worked!

Brent, it's actually been a little while since I've sharpened my Sebenza, as I haven't been using it much lately (not sure why - I need to change that) but I don't recall that the thumbstud was a peoblem for me. I have heard others mention this as a problem though.
I'm very impressed with the job that the EdgePro does.

I get the best performance out of my BG-42 when I use the Sharpmaker but stop at the medium stones. BG-42 is so clean that if you polish it with the fine stones it will not have the bite that I look for. I don't need to shave with it although it will with that edge, I need to cut things.

I use my large for everything one uses a thin blade knife for. Carving wood, cooking and general utility. I don't twist or pry with it. It is a slicer.

I use the 204 sharpmaker, and only go through the first three stages. It still has some "bite", and is shaving sharp. On the right angle, it will cut hair, without touching skin. This is my definition of "sharp enough". It really doesn't take much to bring back the BG-42. In fact, 5 "sets" gets it sharper than I received the blade from CRK.

Spyderco 204=SHARP! All I've used for the past 10 years. I currently have one at work at my part time job in the sporting goods dept. at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter and have some regular customers who come by for sharpenings:D of course I'm glad to accomodate them.

I use the SharpMaker 204, and go through
all 4 rods (Most of the time I'll only use the Whites because it only needs a touch-up)
but I use the 30º the whole time.

It's SHARP! But I have my LM WAVE
to use if I need a "toothier" edge.

Now I just need to get a set of UFR
and I'll be able to put a real edge on it :)

If your not careful it's pretty easy
to round your Tip with the SharpMaker
(or So I'm told :) )

I think it does an amazing job when it is time to sharpen. But I strop often and occasionally use the ceramic rod.
