In the past few years I have learned almost everything there is to know about the Chris Reeve Sebenza, everything you can learn without owning one or ever handling one, at least. I've repeatedly heard about the joyfully solid heft of the knife, the perfect ergonomics, the absolute smoothness with which the blade opens, and the general feeling of superior craftsmanship that the Sebenza exudes. Needless to say I've been itching to handle one for a long time now. Unfortunately for me, no one I know has a Sebenza or knows what it is, and the same goes for the cutlery shops where I live and the cutlery shops I have visited out of state and even out of country. Finally, at a small knife shop I came upon in Boston MA, sitting all alone on the bottom shelf of the display case was a Sebenza--finally! I asked to see it, but to my great dismay I was informed that since I was under 18 I could not lay a finger on it. I had to settle for this; my dad (who knows next to nothing about knives) handling the knife, opening and closing it, then describing how it felt to me! My dad is more dangerous with a knife than I could ever be! I nearly lost it right then and there.
The Sebenza will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine, someday.

They wouldn't even let you handle the knife in your dad's presense? Incredible.

Trust me: It's nice!

There are handles that are more ergonomic out there, but none more versatile, in my opinion.

Stop when you get to bone.

I feel your pain Soloman....talk about the golden goose being so close. The lock up is superb and it is a very nice knife and one you can count on. Try to find a knife show and I am sure some fine dealer will let you handle one. Dealers are pretty nice guys.

Hope you mean hold your Sebenza. Otherwise... =)

It is not the fall that kills you. It is the realization that "yes, you did something that stupid."

If you ever make it to Dallas, Texas or Tucson, Arizona, give me a shout. I usually have a few laying around and would be glad to let you play with what ever is in stock at the time.

You may want to send the Reeves a polite email describing this situation as they strive to maintain the highest standards possible and this certainly does not qualify.

In fairness to the folks running the store...

They may have a city ordinance to contend with, and may be being super-cautious.

They may have had prior encounters with other adolescent boys who were less responsible than present company.

If it was a hired clerk as opposed to the store owner, you may have found less "flexibility."

When I'm at a knife show, I won't hand a knife to somebody who is clearly under 18 unless there's responsible adult present. I will hand the knife to a parent and let the parent take responsibility for the minor's fingers. I'm a little more "relaxed" if I see that the person is already carrying a knife. And my attitude may depend on a lot of subjective things, like my overall mood and whether I think there's likely to be a sale at the end of the discussion.

Hi,

Jim: For SOG, we do some very limited retail sales through our manufacturing factilities. We have an 18 year old policy (not that the policy is 18 years old

). But ours is not based on city ordinance. It is based on liability and insurance reasons.

Soloman: I can understand your frustration. Be patient, though. It will be worth the wait.

Kinda like sex huh? You can read about it, watch movies about it talk about it and know everything there is about it....But it's never quite the same is it?

How about give your dad the money & just have him buy it. I know what you mean about dads though. I could never give mine a nice knife. If he had a Sebenza & it got dull, he'd have it in the basement on his grinder, with the sparks flying! trust me on this Ive seen him do this before. I gave him my old Sharpmaker to use now.

That really stinks. I can't stand the laws that are in effect today. Like your going to go into this shop, buy a $500 knife and go stab the next person you see. Dam I wish they would fix some of the laws in this country. Im with you!!!
THANKS!!!

In a highly politically charged and equally highly litigous society, Ron pretty much hit the nail on its head. Sad but a reality. But good luck on your shopping.

soloman,

Did you by any-chance notice the PRICE on that Sebenza that you wanted to look at?

Let's say that you are now 16, almost 17 years old...you might want to start saving your money NOW, in-order to be able to afford to buy one of those OVER-PRICED Sebenzas when you DO turn 18!.
