In this article I wrote about the very popular videos by "Kiwami Japan" where he makes knives out of odd materials like jello, rice, plastic bottles, or underwear. I described the general format of the videos, what makes certain materials better than others for knives, and I made approximately a bazillion GIFs of Kiwami Japan videos so you understand what I'm talking about.

Very nice, as usual! As one very minor correction, the implement he's holding in that photograph at the start of the article is a "kama", which is more analogous to an American/European sickle (one-handed tool for harvesting cereal grains) or grass hook (one-handed tool for cutting lush vegetation) rather than a scythe (which is a two-handed tool, used standing upright.) I hate to even mention it, but scythes and associated tools are a passion of mine. :D

Fixed!

This was a fun article, thanks for writing it! I do watch some of that guys vids. Interesting indeed.

Is he using milk chocolate, or some kind of dark chocolate modified? :D
Seriously though, it looks like this guy is having a lot of fun! Thanks for the article Larrin!

You should make link in your article on your site to open in new window .....
PS .This Japanese ninja give me excellent idea with this video when I watched it first time .....
Idea is to laminate steel blade with carbon /visible only small part of blade and edge / so far I make two try and failure but learn lot , next time I will succeed :)

A few people on ig have made some like that. Here's just two examples. Alot more just have the edge bevel exposed.

If I'm not mistaken they put the knife in the middle of the mold. I cant say if it's been heat treated before or after, but assume after. I presume they wouldn't use an autoclave.

I have seen some of those videos, and while I find them somewhat amusing, I can't help but shake my head at the enormous amount of work he does to produce a knife out of those materials. He could probably crank out real knives with less effort, but I get that is not the point of his videos.

Yea but he wouldnt get the views from making regular knives which in turn equals less $$$

I do get it, of course people want to see something different, and that means more views. I do not like the amount of effort he puts into something that will not last, to me that borders on being frivolous.

If I were to do something like that, I would do a wet layup over a fully heat treated blade. No need for heat curing of the carbon fiber that way. It would require some vacuum equipment and supplies, but nothing like an autoclave thankfully.

I use unidirectional carbon fiber for my project .That way I have control where knife will flex and where will be stiff. . . For cosmetic on surface I will use marble carbon :) 50 tons press and 140 degrees celsius in oven will do same job as autoclave . Woven carbon fiber is good only for cosmetic . . . Carbon fibers are 70 times stronger with the “grain” than against it ;)
What I am trying to make is something like hidden tang knife .Full size of handle would be from carbon . Steel HSS , because don t flex to much .
Something like this

Yep, if you're going to do a layup by hand, might as well do one with uni, that way you can tailor your structure. Though I'd still wrap it with some weave, just for aesthetics and to give some small degree of protection to the inner layers.

No , for aesthetic I will use marble carbon , will be easy to put on several layers .I like marble carbon more than anything ..... This marble carbon is made by me and blade of course :)
