within 20 mins of opening this thing I had an old knife from dull to insanely sharp(to me anyways), and most of that time was just spent on back beveling.

so easy to use! I didn't even bother watching the video because I had read so much on here. just go slow and follow everyones recommendations

well I went through so many threads I just figured I knew exactly what the video had in it

mark the edge of the blade with a marker(use the marker to judge progress)
start on the 30 degree setting with the spine of the medium grit stone
work on that until it appears you've back beveled the edge
then just go to 40 degree and work your way from coarse spine to course flat, the fine spine to fine flat on the 2 stones

focus on having a smooth motion+perfectly vertical+only using pressure from the blade weight(I found using the blade weight only to be very helpful in getting it from shaving to very easy shaving)

not sure if going through the grits is necessary on the 30 degree setting. I didn't do it but most likely will on my next knife

I've found this to be very important in getting really sharp edges with the sharpmaker. Too many people (myself included) put a lot of pressure against the stone. This causes a wire edge on one side, which will roll back and forth. I discovered that lighter pressure will give you a much sharper final edge.

purchase the ultra fine stones and then you will really love it. they take the edge to a whole different level

Been thinking about getting one of these for a while now. Maybe it's time to pick one of them up. I currently only have water stones and it really sucks on folders. Until then, I will just continue to use my little TAD gear sharpener.

Along with the ultra fine, I also bought the diamond rods, and it cuts down on more time for the very dull knives. Great system.

Yay :D! What a feeling to be in control of a dull edge and the pride that comes with sharpening it yourself. (And then the wife laughing her ass off at your bald left arm held next to your hairy right one)

Have you read what pull through sharpeners can do to edges?

Always test your edge on Both arms. You can very easily have considerable difference from one side to the other. Generally a good indication of a slight wire edge.

I would recommend the purchase of diamond rods because I can easily see them cutting sharpening times down ALOT. when first sharpening a knife with it anyways.

I can whittle hair just with the fine stones that come with the sharpmaker. I may eventually get the ultra fine, but right now I can't justify getting them. what more could you ask for than whittling hair

Finally someone who understands. I've been saying this for years. Apparently toilet paper slicing is the latest most difficult test. My knives cant do it, that's for sure.

I like to wrap the rods with 80 grit wet/dry sandpaper to do my re-profiling, clamping it on with bulldog paper clamps. Makes the job go very fast!

Carving the hair into a copy of the Eiffel Tower! :D
