On 02-21-2001 at 02:01pm I posted a response to the topic thread, "Knife Maker Gives Customer List To Police". I have one more question: of the 9,737 registered members in our Forum here, how many wrote at least ONE letter to an elected representative in the past 12 months, asking for some rational thinking about our hobby, and for many, our livelihood - knives? Just one? Or maybe a phone call?

About two years ago, I wrote to several local and Federal politicians. Only one replied, my Congressman. Although I had written protesting restictions on knives, his response thanked me for supporting handgun control. This complete lack of understanding, or even literacy, totally baffled me.

It is understandable that many, if not most, people feel that writing or making a phone call is a waste of time because they won't get a response ( or a form letter response). They're right, they probably won't. But at least they can say they did their part, they made an effort. And, the offer I have made to all members of my range also applies here (another place where I feel very comfortable): if you want to send a formal letter to an elected representative but feel your skills aren't up to it, send me a rough version and I will fine-tune it for you. No charge.

I typed up a letter regarding U.S. Customs seizing that shipment of CRKT knives up in Portland a while back. I never sent it off though. Not because I was a lamb though. I just plain forgot.

Absolutely! And it WILL make a difference - even if it is only to your own self-esteem. And after the Florida election clambake, I personally believe that no one will ever be able to say, at least with a straight face, "Why should I bother, my single vote (or letter) won't make a difference anyway."

Write! Call! E-mail! Fax! And if you need a little help in getting your message out - call me.

Yup. Sent one off about the CRKT dustup. Took a total of 30 minutes to write and send. I figured it was worth my time.

I have sent several letters, and even got some call back from state official. My active involvement is more in the line of gettin conceal carry passed, not just knife issues.
