The Sixth Sense

This past weekend, I ran out to the local purveyor of all things alcoholic to pick up a few items for a party my wife and I were to attend later that evening. I bought two different kinds of beer, along with a few bottles of wine and a gift bottle of vodka for the hosts. My purchase was a bit larger than the normal six or twelve pack that I would just throw in the front seat so I decided to pop the trunk and put everything in there.
The liquor store is on a main road, four lanes across and very heavily traveled, especially at this time (around 7:00 PM on a Saturday night). The store shares a parking lot on one side with a fairly popular bar/restaurant so the lot was fairly crowded. As I unloaded the cart into the trunk, a chill shot down my back. It literally made the hair on my neck stand up and I could feel my back muscles tense and my shoulders rise. I turned to find a man approaching me from behind. He was probably 15 years older than me, roughly my size, with a full head of white hair and a white beard. When I turned and realized he was there, he stopped dead in his tracks. There was a moment of hesitation and then he asked if I had any money I could give him. My response was “No”. He stood there for a second and said “Thanks” and walked away. It was then and there that I decided to never ignore these feelings again. I did not consciously hear or see this man as he approached me but those “spidey senses” went into overdrive.

I have no idea if he had intentions other than panhandling me for some spare change but it is the first and only time I have ever been approached in this particular area and I have lived here over five years. I do find that to be a bit odd.

So what is this? The “sixth sense”……… some form of intuition? Let’s hear some stories of having those eyes in the back of your head and how they saved your bacon or, at least, were somehow validated. What about that feeling that someone is watching you……is that the same as this?

I guess not. :) I nomal pay attention to those feelings just because I've made fun of to many people in horror films not to. :p

I'm glad nothing happened at least.

I was in my back yard, well after dark, to retrieve my stuck "rain train" sprinkler.

I went out to the sprinkler and got it moving again, and then I felt like someone was watching me.

I looked up, and in the tree above me, not 15 feet away, was a large Barred Owl.

He was apparently drawn to the commotion of the gentle sprinkle of water on the grass below.

It was very dark, and there was no real reason for me to have noticed him, except for the feeling of eyes on me, like your sixth sense feeling.

The owl stuck around long enough for me to snap this picture

I`m not sure about sixth sense, but I`ve been told many times that I have no sense.

LOL

I've had somewhat similar experiences, but cannot recall any details right at the moment.

I take it as a means of self protection.

That applies to John's similar experience, as well as Outdoorfan's.

There is something to this I think, there has been plenty of times when I assume I'm alone and then I "feel" somebody looking at me. Sure enough I turn around and someone's there, usually someone I know like one of my brothers
or friends I work with. It works the other way around too.

I guess I am just curious as to what this "sense" (or lack thereof :) ) is. Is this some vestige of when there we were routinely hunted as prey? Is it a physical sense, mental or some combination of the two? It seems to be outside of the conscious mind yet it manifests itself in a very physical way.

Personally, I think it is some sort of a vestigal sense from long ago. Similar to the muscles that try to move our ears when we hear an unexpected noise. Don't really get how it works though.

I don't understand it but do believe we have it. On a scouting trip for deer sign I decided to take a different route back to the truck. Walking down a steep ridge the hair on my neck started to stand up as I got an overpowering feeling of being watched. I slid up to a large tree and stood motionless for several minutes. The feeling didn't ease up but I could see no sign of anyone or anything. I convinced myself that I was being overly cautious and continued on. I had gone only a few feet away from the tree when I heard rocks sliding as if something had taken a step up the ridge where I had just came from. I slowly made my way back to the truck looking over my shoulder the entire time. I never saw anything and the feeling started to subside ad I got closer to the access road where I had parked. I don't know what was there but do believe something was watching me and following me.

Its a real thing. A combination of experience, intelligence, sight, sound, and something else. Your body can feel things without you sensing it, from the footfall in the dark to eyes staring at you. The easy test, close your eyes and reach for your partner. From 6" to 12" you'll feel them. The healthier they are, the bigger the distance. Its a warm pressure.

Spidey sense is a good word for it. Problem is too many people have been trained/told to ignore it, and they pay a price sometimes.

Listen to that small voice, its there to protect you.
