It is known that human beings have five senses: SEE, HEAR, TOUCH, TASTE and SMELL

Then there is the 6th sense that we all read about and sometimes see it on display at the nearest cinema, projected to exaggerated proportions.

Can this sixth sense, purportedly an awareness of things, humanoid or otherwise, in the environs when all the other five senses do not detect it, be developed by an ordinary person?

I have heard about some Vietnam soldiers who have a natural affinity in connection to abnormal talent that bewilders their less psychically endowed colleagues. The sixth sense soldier tended to be the one the other troopers would always want to follow, because the survival rate in an ambush situation is unusually high.
It is learnt that some people who find that an uninhabited zone is home to them can eventually develop a sixth sense, whether a heightened sense of other life-forms or danger lurking in an uncharted territory.
A friend of mine once spent three years alone on a mountain. He lived in a shack devoid of piped water and electricity. At the end of 36 months, he said he was so comfortable in his new home that he resisted the idea of returning to civilisation.
I understand that if the five human senses are developed to their optimum level, it may trigger the emergence of the sixth sense.
I was wondering if there's anyone who has developed that sixth sense. Those who claim to have this ability tend to have spent some time alone in the jungle or have had prolonged exposure to survival training, or even have an inclination to live alone in the wilderness.

Hey,

Actually I believe in a sixth sense, I have spent many months in the forests of alaska and lower 48, and I seem to be able to know when other animals are present.

I am not sure if it is a "sixth sense" or if my hearing and knowledge of sounds that might be an animal is why I know they are there. I mostly go on week long trips light backpacking (primitive shelters) by myself. I feel that the wilderness is a greater pace to be then our overcrowded cities.

For me I can feel a little more adrenaline pumped through me then my mind tells me that something is a danger near me. I stay calm and try to locate and figure what this danger could be.

Sincere,
FLY GUY(stands for fly fishing guy)

Some years ago I came across an article stating there could really be something to women's intuition. Women are naturaly more sensitive to certain environmental situations, and notice subtile changes in people better. This is how no matter how good you thought you were lying, mom still new it was you that got into the cookie jar.

Those of us in the martial arts, are very aware of the plane that flies overhead, the horn that honks 1/2 mile away, and when a door is opened behind us. Many of our friends and the people around us just are not aware of these occurances.

After beening in combat long enough, constantly trying to reach out with your senses, you can develope a "feeling" about this. In police work its called "intuition" after so many years.

There's more to it, but I think you've gotten the idea. -Brian

I believe in "the sixth sense" but I think it's a matter of the mind. ever have a problem you couldn't seem to solve so you take a break and the answer pops into your head? It was in your head all along, you just weren't listening.martial artists, hermits, woodspeople, combat soldiers etc. are all processing their environment on a deeper level than the typical person in a city who has to tune out much of his environment to cope. often premonitions and even dreams are the subconscious mind that has figured something out that our rational conscious self has not.

Personally, I am quite convinced that most people have the ability to tap that almost uncharted territory called the Sixth Sense.
When I have a near intractable problem which bothers me, I would drop whatever I am doing and go for a walk. It can be a long walk. In fact, the longer and more leisurely it is, the better.
More often than not, I would end the journey with a solution. This experiment took place years ago. Not so long ago, I found out that some scientists are beginning to find out that answers to problems come from what they call "image streaming".
It is yet a not-fully-explored field but Leonardo da Vinci had really tried it and found it to be a marvellous problem-solver.
The sixth sense which we all have heard about is getting in touch with some kind of cosmic energy that encompasses every living thing.
It's hard to convince people but those who have honed this particular skill to a high degree normally doesn't talk much about it. They fear that they will be labelled as being weird.
Sixth sense beings treat it as normal. Many who have it shrug it off as intuition, thereby leaving it at probably at elementary level or half-way to the intermediate.
Those who develop it to the nth degree are sometimes called clairvoyants.

I see dead people.

Sorry, I just had to say it.

Dear E_Wok,

A friend who tried being a monk for a while had to undergo an extensive period meditating in the jungle alone in a small shack built specially for that purpose.

After what seemed to be two weeks, he claimed he actually saw dead people. Unfortunately, he cracked under such intense pressure and left the temple, so to speak.

So it is not wrong to say "I see dead people." Some people do.

Golok, you may want to read the book "Awakening Spirits" by Tom Brown Jr., it goes into awareness in depth. I know a lot of people here don't care for Tom Brown, but if you're interested in this type of thing, I think you'll find his books worthwhile.

Hi X39,

Mucho gracias for that tip on "Awakening Spirits". I shall keep a sharp lookout for that book the next time I walk into a bookshop.

Whether or not some mental power exists which we can label "The Sixth Sense", it is very true that by becoming more aware of your environment, you will notice small changes easier. The tracker who can follow a field mouse through a grassy meadow does not have some supernatural power, merely the knowledge and experience that shows him where to look, and what to look for.

Spend more time somewhere and you will see more, and be more aware of what you do not see. Regardless of the psychicness of this ability, you can achieve it by merely being there.
