...the bastard child of SOG fixed blades. I've been thinking of getting one lately though. I can get it for $35, why not? The point is (bad pun:rolleyes:) i want to use it a slicer-the heaviest use it might see is making shavings, and even then I'm more inclined to use my kabar USMC. I foresee use on fish very small game animals, (squirrels, chipmunks, and such like), rope, and plastic. How would this practically unknown knife, which I could not find a thread about anywhere, stack up against other similar sized fixed blades and their respective steels? I was also considering a Kabar Impact in D2, RAT 5, SOG Seal Pup Elite, a fixed BM Griptillian, and A Kershaw Echo, and on the high end, a Bark River Fox series or maaaaaybe a Fallkniven F1. That would be as expensive as I could possibly go, and i'd be broke for a long time.

So, how do ya'll think the Field Pup, as the outstanding value of the group, stacks up against these benchmarks?

It is a good knife but I prefer the Seal 2000 over it. For the uses you stated there are a lot better choices like the Sog Field Pup. Crap I thought you were talking about the seal pup.

This is a scaled down version of the SOG X-42 Field Knife, from what I can see. It has the same design andi s just scaled down. It also doesn't have the exposed Torx fasteners and is priced a lot lower...like half the X-42.

The X-42 is out of production, but I found it an excellent general purpose field blade in two combat theaters. I actually bought 6 of them and used (and lost) at least three. There are some of these for sale on eBay at the moment (28 Sept 07) with average price around $100. The Pup is just that, smaller, lighter, and whimpier for my money. But, as A.G. Russsell often reminds us, "no one really needs a huge knife, but every new guy wants one."

I've seen those on sale at an online retailer for about $70, although that isn't in new condition. BG-42 steel, right? The Field Pup is AUS-8.

I bough 2 NIB Sog X-42's on ebay this month $125 for one and $159 for the other. They are very hard to find you have to snag one when you can.

I have an X-42 Field knife and used to have a Field Pup (gave it to a friend). I like both. Wish I still had the Field pup... Have been planning on buying another one sometime in the near future.

Field pup makes a good camp blade for kitchen work, general camp cutting and so on. Sure it's not the latest steel but SOG sure does a good job heat treating AUS-8. I have a Kershaw Echo, AUS-8 steel, recurved blade and it is about as nice as the field pup. The Field Pup has a longer cutting edge and I think it's a little easier to sharpen because the recurve isn't as curvy. Both are nice knives for the price. :)

Do not knock down FP. mine seen its share of game.
Works perfect as a skinner for sm/med animals.
AUS-8, well... thats what you want in dressing knife, something that will take an edge after 5-6 strokes.

I have a BG-42 field knife, but saw them on the SOG site as S30V...??? maybe the later ones?

Here is a picture comparing the 2.
