The South Fork Cabin Knife (JK SFCK), is a design sent to me by jds1, to honor our semi annual trip to Michigan for our Gatherings. Since I have not done one of these threads in a while, I thought it was time for a "Making Of" thread!

The specs:

9 3/8" overall
5" blade
3/32" thick (also available in 1/8" thick steel)
Rounded spine
"Compass Point" pattern pin holes in the center

Here is the pattern Jeff sent me, along with the O1 steel

Here is the blank, all profiled out and drilled

Here it is partially ground (this is as far as I grind before heat treat), with spine rounded and stamped with my mark

In the furnace ready for heat treat, which will be tomorrow

I will continue to add photos as it progresses.

Some typical Gathering pictures, you can see the cabin in these.

good stuff John! brings back some good memories. that was a fun time.

i like the profile of the South Fork Cabin Knife. looking forward to seeing what you do with the handle.

Good looking design on that one!

Jeff even does a great job on the larger blades, nice design. Good seeing the WIP photos too, looking forward to seeing the finished product.

While the blades are heat treating, here are the red liners gluing on to the black canvas micarta scales.

Heat treated blank. Tomorrow I`ll get it cleaned up, and get rough cut handles gluing on. I need to get ready for work now.

Duh, sometimes my stupidity amazes me! Connie came home from work and asked me why I was dressed up, were we going somewhere? I said no, I have to go to work. She told me it's Monday, You don't go to work until Tuesday!

I don't know about Mokena time, but down here in west central IL, it is most definitely Tuesday.:D

Been there, done that...

I really like the compass pattern for the pins. Can't wait to see what it looks like when completed.

Cleaned up, with all the components, ready to assemble and glue.

Gluing together (outdoorsfan and Chris8 may see something they are interested in in the background)
