Just got an old 501 back from the spa today. It needed the treatment, and actually cleaned up relatively decent on the bolsters. It wasn't too bad off when I sent it in, just old and could use some love. Not really impressed, but I wasn't expecting it to look new after 30+ years of use. Overall, I can't complain.

My question, is should I have expected less from them when it comes to opening/closing action? It's gritty, like there's sand or something in there. I don't know if that's the case, but that is what it feels like. That was one of the reasons I sent it in, but it came back in equally gritty and subpar condition as far as the action is concerned. It even still picks up dirt and grim every time you open it (it has to be wiped off each time before closing). Is that something they can't do anything about? If that is the case, what does a person do to smooth out the opening/closing action? If Buck 'cant' do it, does that mean it's a lost cause? Just curious. Maybe I was expecting entirely too much in hoping it would open and close smoother when I got it back. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

A SPA service is a basic sharpen and polish, so it helps us immensely if you want something fixed to let us know when you send it in. Our tech can do upwards of 100 knives a day so we don't always notice everything when we are doing a basic SPA treatment..

We can certainly fix that for you.

Put some wd40 in it and open and close it alot then wash it with soap and open and close some more. Hit it with some pressure washer if available i unno or compressed air. Wd40 to get things moving and it should clean rust or other crap. Then soap to get the wd40 and other dirt out. Not an expert maybe others will give got better advice. GL

Jeff, thanks for your response. Certainly not complaining, I was just wanting to know what to expect. I understand your techs go through a lot of knives, in fact I was surprised to have it back as quickly as it came. Thank you, and whichever tech serviced it, very much for that one! I will certainly give the advice a shot, and if it doesn't work as I would like it to, I will send it back in. I appreciate your feedback!

I'm going to give that a try, and hopefully it works out. Thanks!

On any lockback knife I open the blade put some Dawn soap in around the pivot area, put it in a stream of hot water pushing down on the lock to make an opening between the blade and the lock in the pivot area. I use a small brush to push out the grime and old oil. Dry it well and use some WD to get the water out. Now oil it with your favorite oil and this should work.

Let me know how it goes. I didn't read it as complaining in the original post.

How about one of you photographers do a photo show, ah la U tube, on how to fix the 'grit' issue when getting a new or refurbished Buck folder.
Maybe we will put it somewhere where we can send people to watch it when they make the age old complaint.

A good suggestion. It seems like we say it a lot. But I think guys just don't know how to attempt fixing this problem. They need to watch a video about it. DM

Question on the spa as I don't remember. Is cost still $7 or more now. Also what is best to put on the address? BKI? I know buck knives isn't a good idea as its an invitation to thieves. Sorry I just don't remember. I need to finally send in that old 119 I bought off the bay a few years ago.

Just didn't want to take a chance of doing something I shouldn't be doing to it. Good suggestions. I also appreciate the feedback. :D:cool:

ETA: worked great, thanks again for the advice. I'll put a little more work into her and make it perfect.
