The spring on my Dalton Companion is crapping out.

The blade doesn't open nearly as fast as it used to, and sometimes it won't even open all the way on it's own. That's not good. I heard that leaving an automatic/assisted opening knife open overnight can help put tension back into the spring, so I tried that, but it didn't help. Is there anything I can do?

Also, if I tried to use the warranty, would it matter that I filed some metal off of the release button? (I hardly even took any metal off, less than 1/16 of an inch, but there was a tiny nub on the button meant to help locate it which I didn't like so I filed the whole thing down a tad.)

Oh, and of course I've already tried cleaning it out and oiling it. After all the time I spent on it last night, if there's so much as a spec of dust in that thing I'll hail Richard Simmons as God. I also loosened the main bolt a tiny bit, which helped, but not much.

Coil springs don't normally lose tension or get weak. They normally snap when they fail. If you have completely cleaned and properly oiled your Companion with no improvement, then you need to send it back to the factory for repair. It must be sent back through an authorized Dalton dealer. I don't think a slight surface modification to the button would void the warranty.
