Also posted this on the Spyderco factory forum, but I know a lot of people frequent either or, so I thought I'd give it a try here as well.

I love my Junior, I really do. Sturdy no-nonsense workman's blade, versatile comp lock, fantastic handle, comfortable to carry, easy to clean. My only gripe: this is first & foremost intended for kids. I know, Spyderco has done a great job turning it into a generic one-size-fits-all but I cannot stop wondering how a beefed-up version (for convenience called Senior henceforth) would look and feel like.

As the Tatanka clearly indicates there is a market for slightly-larger :) folders, I was just wondering how you guys would feel about a Junior-based Senior. This thread is not about changing the steel or handle material, but rather on gathering input on 'would this be the ultimate backpacker's dream', 'how large would be too large?' and ultimately 'would you buy one?'.

It is a really useful design, as far as marketing it to backpackers, if they went frn to cut the weight and cost down it would work really well in that role. A 4-4.5 inch blade would be cool but the blade length of the junior is still very useful.

A Jr in FRN would weigh very negligible under G10 since we are talking about a very minimalist handle.

I say they should sprint run it as is in M4 or Cruwear. Move production to Golden if at all possible too.

Fully agree here, re-tooling for FRN would only increase cost while offering marginal advantages (if any)

I'd buy a sprint myself, but I think it's too early for that, the Junior has only been disco'd for what, 1-2 years?

Reminds me of the Superleaf

Both fine knives but very different other than comp lock and wire clip and VG10. Superleaf is a handful of handle (too big to me) and very HD. Junior is not like any other knife I am aware of in that the handle basically is a fraction the size of the blade yet it works

Hello guys, thank BRJ for this thread and to you all for your valuable input. :)
Truth is, I've been working on the Senior project for some time and the work is almost finished. Don't expect an enlarged Junior though. Although you may notice some familiar feats, it's without doubt the adult rated version of the knife. You may choose between two blade shapes (drop point like the Junior, or Bowie style) and it may sport even a flipper (which is rounded and discrete in closed position so it won't hang on your clothes, yet pretty functional when open I dare to say). :)
For me, the only question that remains is: "Shall I keep the flipper or not?" ;)

Woohoo, bring it on :)
I'd also say keep the flipper, it would be a nice option on a wide & massive blade.

Dialex,

I would keep it as close to the original as possible, as you killed it designing the Jr. It is simply perfect as is
