The state of competition in the knife world?

O.K., I have been a knife nut for a relatively short period of time. In fact, my first knife magazine was purchased only about 2 years ago! Well, even in two years I have seen so much progress in the development of knives as well as the art of making them. So many makers are making so many great blades these days. With that, I am wondering whether the nature of the business side of our knife world will change. I mean, look at an Elishewitz, a Randall, Chris Reeve, Neil Blackwood, and hundresd of others I could name here and trying to decide which ONE to buy is nearly impossible. I say nearly because I think that the near future of competition in the knife world will be based on a beauty contest!! No, not who has the prettiest bolsters, but who has the prettiest legs. With that, I nominate Tom Mayo, given his pic in the June issue of Knives Illustrated, as winner of the first Unofficial Bladeforums Knife Maker's pageant! Congrats Tom. What's your secret- all that surfing?

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!http://www.nebsnow.com/L6steel
Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!

Rather than using the legs as a criteria, I respectfully suggest a more appropriate measurement for knife makers would be the 'organic tool holder'. As I am unfamiliar with the features of most of the posters on this forum, I leave the nominations to those with more experience.

I applaud your imagination and insight to the world of knife making and look forward in anxious anticipation to the nomination lists to fill.

All the Best

give me a break.only my wife likes my legs..there are soooo many good knife makers like you say...that where do you begin????? as i have said many times, first you have to get the basics down, then get good at them, and then develop your own style....in some cases peoples best is so far beyond what i can imagine it blows my mind....

Thats exactly how I feel about your work Tom! Kidding aside, I look at your double guarded fighter with black micarta handle and wonder just when I'll be good enough to make something like that! I'll stop ogling over your legs, but not your knives; your wife will have to excuse me for that
