Anybody have any information on the true events that inspired the movie? I found a forum and website with news articles and sketches of the suspects. I cannot figure out if the site is part of the viral marketing to get more people to watch the movie or if the events really happened. I tried googling for more info but a lot of the results were just forums. If such a thing did happen, wouldn't it be on crimelibrary or wouldn't news articles show up? If anybody was around the area when this happened, please clarify.

Remember the hype surrounding the Blair Witch Project, there are still people who think it was real.

Movie makers have used the term "based on true events" so often the phrase on has lost meaning. All it take is a single fact to be included to call it this, if someone dies in the desert they can can make a mega movie with 20 teens dying at the hands of radiation mutated hillbillies and call it based on true events.

I've read guesses ranging from the Manson family murders to the Keddie Cabin murders, but my guess is that it's just BS. Also, I understand it's basically a remake of a French thriller called "Them".

Probably hype. Same thing happened with the movie Wolf Creek; based on the "backpacker killer" in Australia, but the only real similarities between the movie and real events is that they both happened in Australia, and there were multiple victims.

Artistic license is the credential that counts most when we're talking about anything "based on a true story" coming out of Hollywood. For accurate factual parallels to something that really happened your definition of "true story" should probably include the phrase: "long ago in a galaxy far, far away".

Them was absolutely horrible. One person dies and she had a heart attack. I've lost respect for French horror movies
