The strangest thing just happened to me

Tonight, I suddenly felt the urge to look for new knives leave completely. I looked at my other knives and the only thing I could think of was: I don't need any of these anymore. I listed them all up for sale on various forums and I didn't feel uneasy, I felt completely relieved. It surprised me what knife I ended up keeping - it's a tanto Socom from 1997. It's nothing to look at and has been used hard, needs a sharpening, and has passed through a previous owner or two. It's machine ground, unevenly beveled, and I bought it as a cheap user a few months ago. But that's the only one I feel like ever carrying, looking at, or using again. Just on a whim, a few hours ago. Has something like this happened to anyone else?

Is this like drunk texting but with knives? I have a feeling your next thread is going to be expressing some serious regret:p:D

No, I never sell any of my knives. If I bought them and regretted it later then they go in the POS bag. Selling knives, I hope this doesn't catch on.

Nope, I give some away then get more. Recently and by recently I mean today I bought a Kershaw Freefall for the sake of doing it, then I realized my dad needed another EDC knife so I gave him the Freefall and I went and bought me a Manifold in blackwash. If it's a cheap knife it goes in "The Drawer" if it's good it goes in the "Top Drawer" if it's a gift it goes in the "Gift Drawer". I hope I never get to the point where I want to sell a great percentage of my blades.

I'm currently in a similar situation. I'm completely satisfied with my pocket knife collection at the moment--I don't feel the want for any other pocket knives right now. Depending on what Spyderco might put out in the next year that could likely change.

Can't say the same for kitchen knives though...I'm looking at honesuki's, yanagiba's, and a sujihiki.

I want to be done with knives. I have been around the block enough to know which knife I want to EDC. But, another knife always tempts me.
:D

Yes, been there and done that, and to this day have no regrets. I still keep a very small accumulation of pocket knives, but they all fit in a pouch I can hold in the palm of one hand. And I don't have big hands. I guess I have about a half dozen knives, and they are all I need. I don't want anymore, but I still like to look. So I look, but in gthe end I ask myself if that knife will do anything mine won't? The answer is always no.

I sold off and gave away many knives that I looked at one day and wondered why I had them. The older you get, and hopefully the smarter you get, you stop buying into the hype of the new this and that. These forums are bad for trying to keep from accumulation of things we don't need. When I stopped going to gun forums, I stopped buying new guns cold turkey. Then I cut way back on guns, and didn't miss any of them. Same with knives. Stopped reading the knife magazines, and then understood how my dad and granddad got by with one pocket knife. They didn't feel the need to buy more, since they had a nice sharp knife in their pocket already.

Don't have many left, but what I have I will keep. I have some up for sale, but I consider them already gone. There are a few knives out there I've thought about buying, but am truly happy with what I have.

What's left:
Spydercos:
Gayle Bradley
PM2
Manix 2 CTS-XHP
Dragonfly ZDP-189
Schempp Rock

ZT:
0561
0801
0770CF

Brous Bionic
TSF Beast
Lionsteel Opera
SOG Seal Pup
Esee Izula

Every time I get the urge to give in, I go out and look at all the knives I have in boxes, play with them in the hand and admire them a few minutes, and then I get over the feeling. I then realize that a certain knife I like is very close to one I have already. I try to tell myself that I get more satisfaction from looking at others' knives and cool designs, and know I do not have to buy anymore to to get that same "cool or awesome" feeling.

I can honestly say that yes, I've come around to a similar mindset. I have two Chris Reeve knives, multiple ZT knives (which to me, represent one of the pinnacles of production folders*) and multiple fantastic fixed blade knives (both production and custom). I just have so many spectacular knives that I know I won't ever use, because I have other spectacular knives I am using.

One thing that has definitely changed is the advice I give out. When non-knife friends would come to ask me what I thought they should get, I used to be like "top end ZT!" or "Higher end Spyderco!" or "Oh man, you need a Benchmade!". These days, when asked, I say "Get a decent, inexpensive folding knife, and use the rest of the money on a Sharpmaker or other sharpening implement. LEARN TO SHARPEN A KNIFE."

I've had three buds all follow this new advice and they are all super happy. One friend has a Thermite that you could shave a baby's bottom with, it's so sharp. Another friend has a Utilitac II, and his favorite thing to do is turn sticky notes into streamers. My third friend bought a lower end Blur and he's still learning, but he keeps a workable edge on it.

All three of these guys use these knives every day, and couldn't conceive of needing as many knives I have, or spending as much as I have. Their needs are 100% met.

*My opinion only, criminy!

Great advice on the good or decent knife and a get a sharpening system that help one learn to sharpen. I need to practice my sharpening skills.

Yeah, after a while I stopped buying new stuff and pretty much stuck with:
Leatherman Wave in the backpack
Spyderco Jester on the keychain
Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in the pocket

I had a Spyderco Military that I really liked that I used mostly for food prep, but ended up giving that to a good friend.

I moat recently broke that phase with the purchase of a ZT 0620CF

I find I'm happiest with two, three knives tops. If I get more than that I start to feel antsy. Kinda weird, I know. One pocket knife for work that won't scare people, and one "fun" knife for weekends or when I'm wearing jeans, so that means I carry a slip joint or Caly3 to work, and a burly Ti frame lock the other times. It's simplistic, but it works for me.

You're not alone. I've been through a couple hundred knives the last 15 years or so. Buying, selling, trading. Summer time is the only time I lose interest. Still looking for the perfect fit with owning a bunch of them or not. It's maddening!

I got rid of all my knives about 2 years ago too. I still don't have a knife. Some people just don't have compulsion to accumulate things. Other people just realize that they don't need so many of one thing. That said, I did commission a custom fighter but that's 8 months or so out. I don't envision myself buying another fixed blade after this. No folding knives speak to me right now, custom or production. I want a Jani-song but who knows when/if Spyderco will get that into production.

I'm just getting started in the knife madness. I carried a small Kershaw for the last 15 years and was fine with that. Then on my day off I stopped by a knife shop just to browse. Oh my, the new styles they've come up with. I'm just embarking on my new found hobby!

I've just started with knives, so I really haven't bought any knives I wish I didn't, or decided I wanted to trade any away. I had a Schrade SCH501S that I had trouble flipping and yesterday I was finally able to flip it.
