The summer of the 7

Last winter I tried to be more open to knives that I could depend on other than the 2, when hiking or backpacking or general bushcraft stuff. What I find myself doing the most when camping or backpacking (which I do the most of) is making stakes for tarps guy lines, pot hooks and firecraft. For me the 2 excelled at these tasks but like I said I was trying to break myself of that. First I tried the 16 because it was the same blade shape as the 2 and so many here love it, this did not fit the role and to me didn't fill much more of a role than the 11 I always have with me backpacking so it was out. Which brought out the 9 for late winter and early spring and I just enjoy this knife and had been a little gun shy since I broke one but 4 trips with it rekindled my love for it but it tends to freak out fellow backpackers when it comes out LOL.

The 7 has just been a knife I toss in my hiking bag and its got the feel of the 9 so I never felt the need to practice with it. I did a trip with JV3 and Bearthedog with it and didn't really put it to work because I like watching and learning from those two. Then I went to NC camping in pisgah for 2 weeks, where it did everything from food prep, to tent and tarp stakes and nightly fires. I had it out on a motorcycle hammock trip after and all the same chores and I've got to say now its not like the 9 once you really get into it. Things I liked about it it didn't have the heft of the 2 or the 9 and conversely at times i also missed that. Where the 2 doesn't flex and the 9 really flexes making me cringe batoning through some hardwoods the 7 sits somewhere in between. The 7's thinner blade makes finer cuts easier when you make bag clips out of sticks (idea I swiped from Reuben), this also made making cooking stands and pot hooks easier. The 7 also doesn't strike fear into the hearts of fellow backpackers when it comes out.

I didn't take a whole lot of pics of much else other than fire prep but here's a few that show the progression of wear on the knife over July and August, Thanks again to Ethan for making such great knives

And there you have it, two months of constant use and it looks like my 2!!! Except the tip is a little more worn because this makes a better drill

To keep it in shape for food prep I found that I had to strop it every other day but that to me is of no consequence, its a been a great knife and will be the fall option for most trips or maybe I'll rotate between the 9, 7 and 2 or maybe its time to rotate the 4 back in as well...

Really cool camp man that's the kinda camping I want to get my kids into I think they would love it

Thanks for sharing excellent camping pics with us. I also get stuck on using the BK2. I should probably start using some of my others. good on you for getting out there and doing it.

Yes thanks for sharing. I really need to get out more with my kids as well.

The 7 is my favorite of all the Beckers. I have most of them and much love for them all, especially the 5 and 15 but the 7 is a perfect all around blade.

Thanks for sharing the pics and your experience with the 7. It is one I rarely get out and use. Having nearly all the Beckers and multiples of many, combined with limited outdoor excursions anymore means I have to experience the use of some of them vicariously through others. Thanks for helping me do that today.

Great thread, TMI. I think if you love the 7, yer gunna hafta try out my 12 next month.....hopefully. I do love seeing a blade that has been well used and used well - all those in-use personalizations speak volumes about both the tool and it's owner.

Nice! Looks like a lot of fun. Glad to see a Becker passing the tests once again. I have a feeling the same results could've been had with your 2,9, or 4.

Thank you for another enjoyable post with your usual great pics...... I love the catch basin for the shavings..... I will remember that one- and use it....

12 is one of the few I don't have, hopefully work works out and I'll be there Friday afternoon

Thank you sir. I started doing the bark in place of my hat or bandana because well I'm wearing them or wiping my face/hands with it and wood shavings have a tendency to stick around and scratch you in ways you'd prefer not to be :D

Great thread.
Love the pics.
More please..

I was going to post Reuben's thread but it looks like he took it down

Here's a few more

2 rubber bands and a split wood makes tongs

Somehow missed this thread first time around. Looks like a great summer was had by you and the fam. Nice area to hike in. Thanks for the pics!

Thanks for posting. Love my 7. Albeit I use it mostly for yard work, it handles anything I throw at it. Trimming bamboo, cutting up fallen limbs, splitting 4"+ wood and the like. For HD chopping a larger blade might be more in line but for what I need the 7 is my choice. For pure edc tasks, suburban yard work excluded, my 11 or 24 can handle most tasks, or the 16. Im sure the 12 would excel as well but for the money Ill keep my 7.

Thank you for the interesting post and the pictures. I like the bag-closing pegs.

You mentioned stropping your knife .... what were you using as a strop? Thanks in advance for your reply.
