Hello and welcome to the Sunday Picture Show. Share your Buck knives with others by posting pictures of them here. New or old, plain or custom, user or safe queen, one or a collection, we love to see them all. This weekly tradition was started in 2010 by ItsTooEarly (Armand Hernandez) and Oregon (Steve Dunn). Help keep the tradition alive. Feel free to click that 'LIKE' but lets not let it replace discussing and complimenting each others knives. Above all, enjoy the show. DeSotoSky (Roger Yost)

November 27 is the 331st day of the year.
Only 27 more shopping days to pick up those Buck knives for Christmas gifts. Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I've traveled to have Thanksgiving with my brothers. I'm sure many interesting things happened on this date in history but I'm in vacation mode so keep scrolling and enjoy the rest of the show.

This week I am showing a few of my 700 series pocket knives. They follow the same blade pattern as the Camillus 300 series except they are a bit heftier with a blockier profile. They are originally listed as having stainless steel frames, changing to nickel silver in the 1987 catalog. The blades are hollow ground, I'm away from my notes but I think the 300 series were not hollow ground until about 1996 or 1997. Top down are the 705 Pony, 709 Yearling, 704 Maverick, 703 Colt, and 701 (Mustang) Bronco. Oddly, the 701 is introduced as the Mustang in the 1981 catalog but is renamed the Bronco in 1983. If anyone can explain that please share. See my post #13 below for a catalog timeline.

I bought my first Buck knife in 1980 or 1981. It was a 703 Colt but I don't have that knife anymore. Nostalgia got the best of me a few years ago and I had to get a few of the 700 series knives. I'm still missing a 709.

The second and third knives are 703's from 1986 when Buck transitioned from two backsprings to three backsprings and swapped the position of the sheepsfoot and spey blades.

The 700 series is another set I didn't think I needed to collect until somewhat recently. Much like the 300 series I didn't think I cared for all that much when I started collecting. Here's a minty Schrade contract 301 I was lucky to run into yesterday at a local show..........

700 Timeline (based on the catalogs)
I posted some incorrect information based on memory in my first post
so I took a quick cruise thru the catalogs.

1979 703 Colt
1981 701 Mustang
1982 705, 709
1983 704, the 701 Mustang is renamed Bronco
1999 last year for 704
2000 701, 703, 705, 709 shown without handle shields, last year 701 shown
2001 703, 705, 709 shown without handle shields
2002 no longer shown

I have some in my collection with brass frames but don't see them in the catalog.
Does anyone have information on those?

DeSotoSky DeSotoSky I thought the same. After researching I found there were three versions from Schrade beginning in 1967 and ending in 1972.

Version 1: Grooved bolsters, tang stamp "BUCK-MADE IN-U.S.A." (the information I reviewed does not clarify if the first version has marked secondary blades)
Version 2: No grooves, same tang stamp as V1, "BUCK" stamp secondary blades
Version 3: Same as V2 except no secondary blade stampings.

Gun Show was a small one in New Berlin, IL about 15 minutes west of Springfield.

Yellowhorse 704. This one is the Coyote. It was part of a series Yellowhorse did for Buck. Each theme, Running Horse (1987), Coyote (1989), and Buffalo (1991), were offered on 3 knives, a 102, 112, and 704. 3 sets of 3 for a total of 9 in the series.

Family photo of 700's including a 703, 704 and 705 in brass. I'm still looking for a 701 and 709.

About 11 years ago, Joe Houser said this:

"I checked and we only made about 1500 of the 704 with brass bolsters. Same quantity of 703's. The whole herd of 700's were offered in brass for a short while but they never appeared in a Buck catalog. I don't have any info on the one you have with the logo on the wood side. that 1500 of 703's and 701's were made and similar numbers of the other three."

New Berlin and Springfield, we are practically neighbors. I’m an hour west of Springfield in Beardstown IL.

The last 700 series Buck I had I gave it to my Brother. But this pair is my favorite 300 series Bucks. Thanks to Craig we were able to have a 301 in perhaps Bucks all time best steel BG42! I still use that one occasionally but due to a mishap in sharpening one blade it's going back to Buck to fix it. The other is the Forum Buck I had briefly until again my Brother admired it..Because of all the 112's over the years he has found or had made, gifted and made sure I had for my collection I was absolutely glad to send it to him.20181212_131459.jpg
