I am a club builder in a small golf shop in Tennessee. A few days ago a young man(looked to be right out of High School) came in to order some clubs. He was wearing a red PT shirt with MARINES across the front. I asked him if he just got out of bootcamp, he replied yes but I still have to complete Advanced Infantry training. I fit him for clubs and built them for him the next morning. When he came in to get them, you could see he was anxious to play. Before he left, I asked him if I could speak to him in private(he was with his mom) I took him into the hallway and gave him my Emerson. I told him to carry it everywhere he goes, esp. Iraq or Afghanistan. He was elated, and thanked me . I was a U.S. Infantryman for 8yrs with 2 combat tours Panama Op. Just Cause 89-90 and Saudi/Iraq OP. Desert Shield/Storm 90-91, I know how important a good knife can be, so I gave him one of the best! I will get another soon, but I will miss her.:D

Outstanding Sir. All of us Old Marines thank you for your generousity and for caring about that young mans life.

I have a bunch of nephews and nieces who are deployed, and they all got freebee high end knives from different manufacturers. Pretty sweet!

Wish I could remember which manufacturers, so I could list them.....

What is a young guy just out of High School doing buying Golf Clubs? Aren't those really expensive? Why would you have custom clubs made when you are about to head off to training?

This does not sound credible to me. Are you certain he did not dupe you?

perhaps his folks bought 'em for him, some folks do have disposable income ya know lol.

your gesture speaks miles of your character and your USMC quality (always a Marine, right?).

...re:bodromarsh, I too am not sure why a guy who can come in for clubs can't get a good knife himself also.....but maybe I'm not aware of the golfing culture in the US, my bad. over here, if you play golf, you're bloody rich cos you need to own all the equipment, pay thousands for club membership and have to be a car owner (the cost of which is the highest in the world).

In the US, most people that play golf are upper middle class. Even here it is fairly expensive. I don't play myself, but know plenty of people that do. I know off-the-shelf clubs are plenty expensive, and custom must be several thousands, depending on the set of course.

The thing about the military, and particularly the Marines, in the US, is that a lot of low income people join. They may not have the income to go to college, and find the military a great way to obtain skills and access to the GI Bill and other help.

Of course these are generalizations. For example, Pat Tillman, a famous pro football player joined the Army, and ended up killed by friendly fire. There are many reasons to join the military such as patriotism, a spirit of adventure, etc. Not every decision is financial being my point.

From the story it kind of sounds like his mom bought the clubs, and not the young man. Maybe she wanted to treat him before he left. I don't know the details, and think the author's gesture was noble and generous.

who cares why the guy plays golf? and there is no indication he could not afford a knife.

the op thought it would be nice gesture, and it was.

gruntstorm, were you also part of operation anaconda (was that panama? sorry if i got that wrong)? a good friend of mine was a ranger during that time.

actually, it might have been grenada. he told me a little about it, but its been a while.
