Im new here and think it would be fun and interesting to start a thread compiling all types of information and resources regarding survival. It seems everyone here is very knowledgeable in the survival field and it would be cool for us all to come together and share information. Heres a few questions to kick it off:

- Are they're any survival / outdoor magazines you would recommend?
- What other survival websites do you visit frequently besides bladeforums? (hopefully this isn't against policy here)
- Also what other survival forums are out there?
- What survival movies or training videos do you recommend?
- Survival clothing / boots / everyday clothing and shoes.
- What survival watches do you own or recommend?
- Obviously survival tools, or just the few you would recommend.
- Any online survival websites with information regarding survival.
- Survival books, fiction or non fiction, that you have read and would recommend.

These are just a few, feel free to add anymore you think of.

Lets gather all the survival resources you guys know of and / or videos or magazines you subscribe to and would recommend. Ive searched around and didn't see any thread like this and thought it might be interesting to try something new. Hopefully you guys feel the same.

Thought of another:
- Foods and plants that are edible in different environments.

It looks like DavezFever really does have a fever! And the only cure is SURVIVAL INFORMATION!

That's a pretty tall order for one thread. My first thought was to suggest searching this forum for the answers to your questions. This action would promote self-sufficiency and trying different search terms would help develop a 'thinking outside the box' mentality. Your best tool in a survival situation will be your mind, so keep it sharp! Another thought is to hang around a while, and most of your questions will be answered soon enough. We tend to cover the same or similar topics often here at the W&SS forum. This is a good thing because someone usually comes up with a different approach or angle on a given topic.

In a quick and dirty way, I will address your specific questions:

- Also what other survival forums are out there?Google search 'Survival Forums' and you'll come up with A LOT. Equipped.org, hoods Woods, Outdoors Magazine come to mind...
- What survival movies or training videos do you recommend?Everything I know I learned from John Rambo and Charles Morse! Ha! I'm kidding! I have no recommendations here. You could check out the Survivorman and Man vs. Wild TV series, but I'd recommend not taking everything those guys say and do as gospel. Some of their techniques may or may not suit you.
- Survival clothing / boots / everyday clothing and shoes.Yes. I like Old Navy woven cotton boxers; preferably the plaid ones that have the same material for the waistband. :D
- What survival watches do you own or recommend? I wear a $20 Timex Turn 'N Pull alarm watch. I've had it for years. my Buddy has some huge, ginormous wrist computer thingie. i'm not sure what all it does. I think he can manipulate satellite orbits with it.
- Obviously survival tools, or just the few you would recommend. You will get as manay responses to this question as there are people out there. The most basic tool is the knife. Most folks here use a knife as a focal point for their kits. After all, this is BladeForums!
- Any online survival websites with information regarding survival.Again, do a Google search and you'll find a ton of stuff. One starting place could be Captain Dave's http://www.survival-center.com/. He maitains a list of different survival kits that is very informative http://www.captaindaves.com/dl-list/dl1-toc.htm
- Survival books, fiction or non fiction, that you have read and would recommend. There was a great thread a few months ago coverig this topic.Like knives, everyone will have their favorite books. I tend to lean towards the non-fiction books. the SAS Survival Guide by John 'Lofty' Wiseman is a great book. I also like How to Stay Alive in the Woods by Angiers, and book (manual-type books) by Tom Brown Jr. Camping and Woodcraft by Kephart is also one of my favorites, as is Woodcraft and Camping by Nessmuk (George Sears)

I hope this helps!

- Are they're any survival / outdoor magazines you would recommend?

I read some bow hunting and knife magazines , there usualy is something survival / bush craft related there

- What other survival websites do you visit frequently besides bladeforums? (hopefully this isn't against policy here)

alt.survival news group , and a yahoo mailing list , this is the best tho out of them .

- Also what other survival forums are out there?

Heaps I guess , google is your friend .

- What survival movies or training videos do you recommend?

Experience , going bush and staying for a while , coming home and working out where I can improve , cut back etc .

I hate citys and towns pretty much so I dont go big on urban survival anymore , as a teenager I lived on the streets tho ( I would hate to do that now tho its too evil most places now ) . experience in making do with what you have , and talking to others who DO it themselves , not armchair experts.

- Survival clothing / boots / everyday clothing and shoes.

In reality , this is going to be whatever youre wearing at the time you realise you are in a survival situation and no longer just in a bit of a tight spot .

boots ... although most books say "get a good stout pair of boots" , you will likely do better with something like joggers or whatever you wear daily , ( providing its sensible, like not high heeled dress shoes . ) They will be broken in allready , your feet will be used to them allready I wear boots because I have done for decades as a requirement for work , tho when I can find joggers in my size I grab them , I can run faster stalk better and climb easier in joggers than boots .

clothes .. I personaly wear what I would like to be wearing if Im stuck , my reasoning is that I will not have time to go home and change is I find myself sudenly in a pinch .

- What survival watches do you own or recommend?

I dont wear a watch , there is a clock in the car if I need one . I couldnt recomend one , watches do funny things when I wear them they slow down , speed up , stop or the glass shatters if I wear them while I sleep . Watches are weird , I dont like them .

- Obviously survival tools, or just the few you would recommend.

A knife , and a disposable lighter . your brain , all else can usualy be improvised or simply done without , the knife and firestarter can be to , but Im just lazy

- Any online survival websites with information regarding survival.

Again google is your friend , there are a lot of websites and info about survival , tho I found a lot of them repeat the same things over and over as the last one . Do not assume that because you read it it is true or will work for you , you dont *know* it untill you have tried it .

- Survival books, fiction or non fiction, that you have read and would recommend.

Maps , are handy and often come in books , first aid , bush craft , bush foods , old self sufficiency books , like late 1800s and early 1900s . I had the chance to read a few and they were goldmines of info .

movies:the edge,castaway
clothing/boots/everyday clothes:speedo and flipflops:eek: just kidding :D
this is location specific, the only constant for me is a boonie hat as survival head gear
watches:Seiko automatic divers watch,Pulsar solar/Citizen ecodrive
anything that doesn't require batteries
survival books: the army survival manual, the camping and wilderness survival book by Paul Tawrell lots of info,Boy Scout field book from 1967
Practical outdoor survival by Len McDougall, understand that most survival techniques are plagiarized, techniques are techniques but how you carry it or implement the items is personal :)

+1 on Backwoodsman mag, it is great for learning the old ways of doing things canning, smoking meat, making soap, it is a lot like our forum as people frequently write in about their knowledge

Wilderness Way mag is Ok too

for videos I have been very impressed with what I have seen from Hoods Woods

For books I frequently come back to my Boy Scout handbook and Fieldbook. Kephart and Nessmuk are on my to buy list though.
