One of the knives that has impressed me most of late, and has made it into my EDC and work knife list, is the Svord Peasant.
It's a friction folder, based on an old European design, and made in New Zealand.

I was always pretty cool towards friction folders till I tried the Svord but its made a believer out of me. While the finish is nothing to write home about the carbon steel blade takes a very good edge. and cuts to my mind on a par with an Opinel....so yeah...it's pretty good. It's also not much dearer than an Opinel to buy (at least in the UK) so its all good news with the Svord.
I don't know what availability is like for the Svord in the US but they are definitely worth a try if you can find one.
