The Tattooed blade - engraving and IDs

Just wondered how many of you engrave or otherwise mark your folding knives for identification? And how (and where).

I know that's heresy for several classes of people (and I apologize for lumping them together):

1) If you're a collector of art knives.

2) If you're always buying knives and then reselling them.

3) If you're a criminal.

But I have a handful of nice (not collectible) knives that I carry daily and wondered how much added trouble there'd be if any were ever confiscated (for whatever reason) and I had no other ID on them to clearly show they're mine when I'm ready to get them.

Just wondered if anyone else engraves/marks their knives and if so, do you do some initials on the blade, the spine or the scale? Thanks.

I have my name and army unit engraved on my Randall 1-8 wall hanger.
I also had my initials engraved on my old style Al Mar Eagle folder. But of course it was then pointed out to me that if I ever needed to use it for self defense that I couldnt leave it in the bad guy without implicating myself.
Other than that I never mark any because you never know when you're gonna sell or trade and I think it hurts value.

And I guess by the same token, if your (engraved) knives were stolen from you (or your home) and ended up in someone (good or bad) later during a fight, that'd implicate you also... bad idea.

How about a non-traceable ID, like a characteristic mark on all your knives ... then you could point to the mark only if you need to (and want to) provide an ID.

That's why I always engrave somebody else's name and address in all of my knives. Lately, I've been using Clay's name and address.

Hey Chuck, Thanx dude, thats perfect!!!!

I just filed a police report and gave them your address. I told them that you stole my custom balis and they had my name and address engraved on them.

I hope I remembered to put my info on that Snake Wood piece.

Eugene, Oregon (BFN) Petunia The Fuzzy Pink Cyber-Pig was found murdered in a back ally behind a local Outback Steak House. Local authorities found an uncommon Benchmade Model 45 "butterfly" knife in the pig's back. Engravings on the blade lead authorities to suspect this man known only as "Clay".

A waitress at the restaurant was quoted as saying "He looked kind of frightening, but he was really a nice, friendly guy. Maybe, if I'd have suggested a bigger steak, he wouldn't have wanted those pork chops."

Police fear that the suspect may already have fled the state, but a manhunt continues. The FBI may be brought into the case.

Authorities say Clay may also use the Alias "Dave". This man is known to have obtained two of these unusual knives the day before the murder and is considered a master at their use. The public is cautioned to be careful as he is considered armed and very dangerous.
