The Team Leader...a knife from the past

Recently, there was a post asking about an old knife SOG used to produce. I've now got the info for you. The knife is called The Team Leader and was SOG's third knife ever produced. It turned out to be less than a success, but has since turned into something short of a "cult classic."

The following are quotes from a promotional flier of The Team Leader:

- Designed for the Military Professional who knows and wants quality. THE TEAM LEADER is the largest scale Bowie design Folding Battle Blade in the industry...the only one.

- 4.25" x .180" blade offered in gun-blued high carbon tooling steel or in stainless steel.

- A deep hollow grind bowie design for incredible sharpness.

- A black cloth micarta handle for ultimate strength.

- All stainless steel pommel, bolsters, liners and mechanism for a lifetime of reliability.

- Pommel and crossguard double ended skull crusher.

- Nylon P-cord, sharpening stone and quick-draw scabbard.

- Engineered from bio-mechanical studies for the ultimate hand leverage.

- Base price: $169.00

This knife sported a blade similar to that of the SOG Bowie and a handle which resembles the Tomcat. But where the Tomcat has a more rounded bolsters, The Team Leader has more angular edges. And instead of the Tomcat's Kraton slabs, The Team Leader had smooth, black micarta insets. The bolster on the blade side is extremely concave (moon shaped), giving two sharp points on the outer edges.

The picture of the knife I am looking at sports the 5th Special Forces (SOG) crest seen on the SOG Bowie.

Before you respond, please know that I have never handled this knife...I've only seen the picture. Also, all I know about this knife I have just written for you. I know nothing else...but wish I did!

A little piece of SOG history!

Hi Ed,

After I posted the message, I realized that this question was going to come. All I have is a printed picture (does not scan well) in black and white, and no scanner easily available. But, I'll see what I can do, OK?

In case any of you are wondering just how big this thing is in your hand, If you were to describe the Teamleader as a "large" folder. The Buck Strider would be kinda... smallish.

yes, yes, yes, I want to see it!

I am really impressed with your size ;-)
But seriously, how would you rate it as a using knife?
Or is this a mint 'collectable'?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I keep wanting to use it... but haven't yet.
In all honesty, I find there is too much handle for the blade... but it certainly is a heavy duty folder... it weighs in around 14 oz!!! (Nearly 1 pound!!!) More than the Trident, and almost as much as the Tigershark!!!

Boy, at that weight I wouldn't call it "Team" friendly.
But with such a knife, one could certainly "push" some weight around ;-)

I am saying this because, I envy you plenty.
Darn! If I had one myself, I wouldn't be able to get myself to use it either because its just too good a knife to just plain use.
