I was making my thrift shop rounds up in Solvang
This one thrift shop didn't seem to have any pocket knives :grumpy:
I have been going there for a few years now
I decided to take a proactive approach, because my mom always said "If you don't ask..you won't know"

"You guys don't happen to have any pocket knives?? I collect them.."

"Yeah..We got a couple here in the drawer"

"Why do you keep them in a drawer"

"Because they are DANGEROUS"

Here was what is the drawer===>
Ka-Bar/Union Cutlery fishing knife WITH hook sharpener intact!! W00t!!!!!
2 bucks
(I was grinning ear to ear since I just started collecting Union Cutlery about a year ago)

The Ideal Co. Camper
2 bucks
I know Ideal Co. is of low quality
I got a couple already
I figured I can smoke 2 bucks worth of Marlboro Lights in a few hours ;)

Simmons Hardware 4*21 Barbers Pet razor
This one was 3 bucks because the lady said it "was an antique"

Oh yeah
My mom also always said "ask and thee shall receive!!"

Wow. Nice score.

I always ask when hitting the thrift shops. The usual answer around here is "sorry, no."

I can buy a 10" butcher knife but they don't want to sell 3" folder .

Nothing worth buying at the used stores around here. $30 for a beat up POS is common...

I found an old Primble Stockman for $2. at a thrift store here, with a broken sheepfoot blade; got it home, cleaned it up, and found out that whoever owned it had ground the broken sheepfoot blade into a nice little screwdriver. I love stuff like that.

thx - cpr

I love thrift shops. Every once in awhile you find something good and cheap.

I like the Kabar. Two bucks , good deal.

I LOVE thrift shops. Our local one (the lillyann) saves All their knives for me . Got one of the nicest carving knives I've ever seen for 25 cents last week. Before I asked for any kind of knife they used to pack them all up and send them to the dump because of the "danger".

Regards to all

Robin

Many old folders with crappy handles that are falling off. Lots of Sabres, I've noticed. Most have cracked handles. I did get a few different patterns in the 2 to 5 dollar range.

I never thought of thrift stores for knives. Well duh! My wife used to work for one and I would have had first pick if I had just asked. How stupid am I? Don't answer that. I will have to go and ask for them. They still know me there. Guess where I am going tomorrow. Man I feel really stupid.

I was thinking
That is sorta my DREAM JOB
Being the "appraiser" at thrify shops
And having "1st crack" at the "new" stuff

For artwork
I know most thrift shops base it on size
So a huge Picasso, that they didn't know was a Picasso, would be like 49-79 bucks

A small Dali sketch would be like $6.99
If it is signed....hehhehe

For pocket knives
Some thrift shops have knowledgeable appraisers/pricers

I have noticed that at 2 thrift shops I go to that Chicago Cutlery knives are now like 6 bucks
They used to be 2-3 clams

I went to this one thrift shop and I was talking to one of the workers
I told him I collect knives
He said," Some older lady came in with a bunch of old razors"
My eyes lit up
He said that if I come back at 11 am tommorow they should be "out on the shelves"
I arrive back at 11 am sharp and the dude says, "Man...The manager took them all for himself..he said he is gonna sell them on EBAY"
I was soooo pi$$ed
What is the point of searching thrift shops for "finds" if the manager is gonna take the good stuff?
I got over it though
It does seem sorta unethical..IMHO
I did feel like calling the head office and see if that is in company policy....

I have not even asked for pocket knives in thrift stores, but now I will thank you! I do shop regularly at Antique stores for some good deals. Some are fair, some are overpriced, but I got my fav. edc at an antique shop in Monrovia CA. It is a 70s Case small stockman in great condition for 30 with tax. It made my week. Like you I enjoy the hunt!

Ebay has killed the thrift store finds or worse made people who don't know any better think the piece of crap they have is worth a 1000$.
You have to check the obscure church ones for the best pickings. I HATE HATE HATE the Value Village for profit stores because half their products they get donated and the other half they buy cheap by the pound and sell for top dollar.

One good thrift score I got was this Weck and Mueller butcher knife.
